Edouard PINGRET (Saint-Quentin 1785 - París 1875) El torero Mario Gonzales, de pie, sosteniendo su capote. Óleo sobre papel preparado en beige. Titulado arriba a la izquierda y abajo a la izquierda en el soporte Mario Gonzales, torero. Dibujo doblado, pequeñas rasgaduras y pequeños faltantes en los bordes. 39,5 x 28,8 cm Nuestro óleo sobre papel forma parte de una serie de las mismas dimensiones y técnica, con anotaciones similares, que Pingret realizó en Ciudad de México a partir de 1852, representando una amplia variedad de la gente que Pingret encontró allí. La mayoría de sus óleos sobre papel se encuentran ahora en la colección Banamex de Ciudad de México (véase Luis Ortiz Macedo, Edouard Pingret, Fomento Cultural Banamex, México, 1989, nos. 82-95 a 100-108-109-136 a 143). Mario González fue un torero activo en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Se le conoce sobre todo por inaugurar en 1851 la plaza de toros "El paseo Nuevo" de Ciudad de México, donde lidió toros de la ganadería de El Cazadero. En 1853, protagonizó una memorable corrida ante los ojos del Presidente de la República, Antonio López de Santa Anna, así como en 1866, cuando lidió en la plaza cinco toros de la ganadería de Santín.
