Manuscrito inglés sobre papel en 2 partes. 80 y 83 en su mayor parte escritos por ambas caras. Hojas sueltas en fundas portadocumentos en carpetas de 4 anillas. Con adjuntos. Carta (8°, 2 pp.) del traductor con firma, dat. Enero 1896: Para mi querida Henriette, que ha sido mi mejor amiga a lo largo de la vida: Fruto de muchas horas de trabajo, con la esperanza de darle un poco de placer, he traducido el libro francés Seul, Alone, que es la verdadera historia de Alexandre Selkirk o Selcraig, de quien se tomó la idea de Robinson Crusoe. Siendo aquel libro una novela y ésta la verdadera historia atestiguada por los navegantes mencionados en él, lo empecé tontamente en su momento, cuando estuve solo durante tres meses en el clima más espantosamente caluroso, con la transpiración cayendo por mi cara y la habitación mantenida tan oscura como era posible para intentar mantener alejadas a las moscas, lo que no conseguí del todo... Sin embargo, puedo decir con verdad que he repasado los dos libros varias veces y creo que todo está perfectamente claro y es fácil de leer, y que lo único que me falta por hacer es poner las comas. Lo he repasado tantas veces que realmente no puedo volver a hacerlo...". - No hemos podido encontrar una edición inglesa de esta obra, publicada en 1857. D

Die beiden Zeichnungen greifen eine äußerst populäre Ikonographie der Renaissance und des Barock'auf, welche sowohl in der graphischen als auch der angewandten Kunst, dort häufig in Form von Bas Reliefs und Vasen, thematisiert wurde. Die Symbolik stammt zum Teil von antiken Sarkophagen, die Putten-Bacchanale zeigen, und wurde ab dem 15. Jahrhundert zunächst von italienischen Renaissance-Künstlern und anschließend insbesondere im niederländischen und französischen Barock wiederentdeckt. Polidoro da Caravaggio, ein Schüler Raffaels, der für die Darstellung von Friesen berühmt war, ließ sich von Reliefs aus der klassischen Antike inspirieren, insbesondere von römischen Monumenten, die Triumphzüge darstellen. Mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit handelt es sich bei den vorliegenden Blättern um Fragmente eines größeren Bacchanal-Frieses, der weitere typische Elemente dieser Ikonographie, wie einen trunkenen Silesius oder einen Ziegenbock als Symbol der Trunkenheit, darstellte. Polidoro da Caravaggio - follower of. Two original drawings with bacchanal frieze. Early 17th century. Pen and brown ink on paper, partly washed. Mounted on cardboard. Each mounted in spots on backing and under passepartout. Individually framed under glass in gilt stucco frame. - Somewhat rubbed and slightly water-stained. One corner with a small crease. - The two drawings take up an extremely popular iconography of the Renaissance and Baroque, which was thematised in both graphic and applied art, often in the form of bas reliefs and vases. The symbolism originates in part from ancient sarcophagi depicting putti bacchanals and was rediscovered from the 15th century onwards, initially by Italian Renaissance artists and subsequently in the Dutch and French Baroque periods in particular. Polidoro da Caravaggio, a pupil of Raphael who was famous for his depictions of friezes, was inspired by reliefs from classical antiquity, in particular Roman monuments depicting triumphal processions. It is highly probable that the present sheets are fragments of a larger bacchanal frieze, which depicted other typical elements of this iconography, such as a drunken Silesius or a goat as a symbol of drunkenness.
