Juan Patricio Morlete (San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, 1713 - Mexico City, 1772)

Juan Patricio Morlete (San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, 1713 - Mexico City, 1772) 'The Glory of God, with his angels, archangels and saints.' Oil on copper. 55,5 x 39 cm. Beautiful Mexican copper, exquisite in details, images and workmanship. Our work is comparable to Morlete's painting 'Saints Adoring the Crucifixion in Glory' preserved in the Mexican Province of the Society of Jesus in Mexico City. A representation of the Heavenly Court consoling the Virgin of Soledad is preserved in the Presbytery of the Parish of Santa Cruz y la Soledad in Mexico City. This painting, inspired by the biblical verse of John 11:40, transcends the category of mere work of art. Devotional in nature, it represents, for those who contemplate it, faith in the place where they will go if they believe: 'If you believe, you will see the glory of God', like 'that great cloud of spectators that surrounds us' (Heb 12:1-4), of saints who believed and are already participating in that heavenly cohort. Above, dominating and centering everything, is the Most Holy Trinity, surrounded by angels. And within all that Divine Glory we descend in levels: the first one welcomes the archangels, six of the seven that are, Zadquiel, Jofiel, Rafael, Gabriel, Uriel and Baraquiel, adoring the Mystery, three to their right and three to their left. The seventh, the Archangel of Archangels, at the feet of the Immaculate Conception, defending and protecting from evil the Son of God that she carries in her womb. On the second level, St. John the Evangelist, St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph, together with his wife The Virgin Mary; St. Joachim and St. Anne, and Elizabeth, Mary's cousin and mother of John the Baptist. At the third level: St. Francis Xavier, St. Augustine of Hippo as bishop, and St. Dominic of Guzman; St. Francis of Assisi, St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Vincent Ferrer. On the lower level, St. John of God, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Teresa of Jesus, St. Dismas the Good Thief and St. Rose of Lima. 'If you believe, you will see the Glory of God' is not simply a painting, it is a constant reminder to follow the right path, that is, the importance of following the path to the eternal life that awaits us.
