Asante Gilt Mudfish Pendant with Trade Bead Necklace. 20th century AD. A gilt pendant formed as a mudfish with tapering body and rounded head, raised central ridge along back; four clusters of suspension loops to one edge and tail arranged 2:3:2:1; coiled 'whiskers' protruding from the face, thin mouth below, raised eyes quartered, series of punched swirls across the body, central band of raised dashes running from head to tail, with a band across the neck and two bands to the face; necklace comprising lost wax beads with a selection of decorated black glass Venetian African trade beads; hollow underside; collection label '54' to the reverse.163 grams, 68cm (26 3/4").
