Ɏ A SUPERB IVORY NETSUKE OF A DOG WITH SANDAL Ɏ A SUPERB IVORY NETSUKE OF A DOG WITH SANDAL Unsigned Japan, 18 th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Superbly carved as a recumbent male dog, the body slightly curved, its head lowered and biting into the strap of a worn sandal. The tail at the end forms a pleasing curl. The ivory is beautifully worn, the finely incised, sumi-stained hairwork almost entirely worn away leaving behind a stunning deep yellow patina, turning golden brown in the back. The dog has a rather peculiar expression, unlike any of the works of the famous Kyoto masters such as Tomotada, Masanao, Okatomo, or Yoshinaga, but rather the netsuke has an Osaka feel to it, perhaps more similar to the output of Gechu. A comparison can also be made to the work of Takenobu, though Takenobu’s suspected active period was later. The underside shows the well carved sandal, and the large and generously excavated himotoshi. LENGTH 6 cm Condition: Very good condition, the ivory heavily worn with a superb patina. Several natural age cracks. Provenance: British private collection. Trade Certificate: The trade certificate for the sale of this lot within the EU has been granted (permit number AT 22-B-0539). This item contains ivory, rhinoceros horn, tortoise shell, and/or some types of tropical wood and is subject to CITES when exporting outside the EU. Ɏ A SUPERB IVORY NETSUKE OF A RECUMBENT OX, ATTRIBUTED TO OKATOMO Ɏ A SUPERB IVORY NETSUKE OF A RECUMBENT OX, ATTRIBUTED TO OKATOMO Attributed to Yamaguchi Okatomo, signed Tomotada 友忠 Japan, Kyoto, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) A fine and powerfully crafted ivory netsuke of a recumbent ox with his head turned to the right, the eyes carefully inlaid in dark horn giving life to the expression. The bulky animal has a pronounced spine, a finely incised fur coat, and a rope halter passes through the nose ring, over the horns and all the way around to its tail, ending in a little loop. The underside is also finely carved, showing the hooves tucked underneath the body. Generously excavated and asymmetrical himotoshi on the underside, in-between the signature within a rectangular reserve TOMOTADA - however much more likely a work by his star pupil Okatomo. LENGTH 6 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and expected age cracks. Auction comparison: Compare a closely related ivory netsuke of an ox, signed Tomotada and attributed to Okatomo, at Zacke, Fine Netsuke & Sagemono, 3 May 2024, Vienna, lot 45 ( sold for EUR 7,150). Trade Certificate: The trade certificate for the sale of this lot within the EU has been granted (permit number FR2301000019-K).
