The Boxer Rebellion / Shooting the Chinese. (circa 1900) The Boxer Rebellion / Shooting the Chinese. (circa 1900). Wooden case, size 80.5 x 50.5 x 15.5 cm, topped by a removable carved wooden pediment (30 cm high). Thirteen carved, polychrome wooden figures are arranged on two superimposed boards. The figures stand upright and can topple backwards when struck. Two wooden boards close the box, while a sturdy metal handle enables it to be carried. A fairground massacre game on the theme of the Boxer Rebellion against European legations in 1900. The top board features six Chinese and a European in the center - probably a British soldier - while the one below features six Chinese. You certainly had to kill all the Chinese and not reach the European - unless you were Anglophobic - in order to win. An astonishing fairground game that bears witness to an event that shook the international community, especially in the West. These popular fairground attractions often recalled the great and small events in the life of nations, and also echoed international political events. The box has been repainted on the outside, and there are some minor accidents (a few feet missing), but the whole is exceptional.
