Geographical lottery (H. Rousseau. Paris, circa 1855) Geographical lottery (H. Rousseau. Paris, circa 1855). Eighteen numbered cards, oblong format 17 x 10.5 cm, covered with red paper printed with Russian leather. On the front of each card is a sheet of paper, most of which is occupied by a colored and gummed lithograph based on a drawing by Bommier, with the title underneath and a frame of figures on the other three sides. The set is housed in a wooden box with a clasped lid; the interior is divided into two compartments: the cartons are stored in one compartment, while the other contains a cloth bag with 90 boxwood numerical counters (cylinder sections: 1.8 cm in diameter, 1.8 cm thick, engraved and blackened numerals on top and bottom, red edges). Each image represents a more or less specific location: Mont St Bernard, Volcanoes (Vesuvius), Port du Havre, Gulf of Salamis, Polar Ice, Sahara Desert, Rocks and Reefs, Cape Parry, Lake Geneva, Pond (Switzerland), Virgin Forest, City of Venice, River Thames, Marshes, Straits of Gibraltar, Ile [sic] Ste Catherine, Caucasus Range [sic], River Marne. Beautiful romantic geographical imagery by Bommier, the usual illustrator of games published by Nicolas Henri Rousseau, a fine tablemaker and publisher just before and during the reign of Napoleon III. The corners of two boards are damaged.
