Full calf with period-worn boards, and rebacked spine (6-rib spine, richly decorated boxes and nerves - 19th century restoration). Sparse spotting in the text, small light corner and marginal wetness throughout the volume, not serious. A fine copy. First edition of the translation by Claude Perrault (1613-1688), physician and architect, brother of Charles Perrault, to whom we owe the colonnade of the Louvre. Commissioned by Colbert, this translation is dedicated to Louis XIV. The illustration consists of a title-frontispiece by Sébastien Leclerc engraved by Scotin and 65 plates, some based on drawings by Perrault, interpreted on copperplate by G. Tournier, S. Le Clerc, G. Edelinck, J. Grignon, E. Gantrel, N. Pitau and G. Scotin, as well as numerous woodcuts in the text. A magnificent edition of this architectural classic.
