ERNEST SANTASUSAGNA SANTACREU (Barcelona, 1900 - Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Barcelona, 1964). "Venus of the mirror". Oil on canvas. Presents restorations. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 65 x 80 cm; 93 x 109 cm (frame). This work leaves testimony of a deep knowledge of the work of the master of the baroque Velázquez, besides a privileged artistic pulse: the vivid pink flesh tones of the model, the way of spreading of the white sheet, the material sense printed in, the metallic reflection of the mirror... are aspects that give account of a worthy follower of the wake of Velázquez. With the utmost wisdom, he succeeds in making the cresting body acquire tactile qualities, as well as the little Cupid. Santasusagna's painting, with its naturalistic language, has always been devoted to the enhancement of feminine sensuality, in its forms and freshness, but without idealization. On this occasion he achieves it through this carnal and realistic Venus, as it was also in Velázquez's interest to take as models young women from his environment instead of representing unreal goddesses. Ernest Santasusgana began his training at the Baixas Academy in Barcelona, and then furthered his studies at the School of Arts and Crafts of La Lonja. He would later become a professor at the latter and, when the institution's teachings were broken down, he became a professor at the Superior de Bellas Artes de San Jorge. He was a member of the Real Círculo Artístico, and made his debut at the Sala Parés in 1928. From then on he repeated his presence in the Pinacoteca room, as well as taking part in the Salones de Otoño and the Spring Exhibitions of Barcelona, among other contests and exhibitions. He was distinguished with honorable mention in the International Exhibition of Barcelona in 1929, in the National Exhibition of Madrid in 1941 with a third medal and in the National Exhibition of Barcelona in 1944 with the prize of honor. He was also awarded twice by the Círculo Artístico. In addition to his hometown, Santasusagna showed his work in Madrid, San Sebastian and Bilbao, and participated in group exhibitions in Egypt, Brazil, Argentina and Italy, as well as in the Biennials of Venice, Berlin and Spanish Contemporary Art in Buenos Aires. He also worked as a poster designer for Metro Goldwin Mayer. His works can be found in several Spanish museums, as well as in many national and foreign collections. It presents restorations.

MOISÉS VILLÈLIA (Barcelona, 1928 - 1994). Untitled. Polychrome bamboo cane. Measurements: 86 x 65 x 20 cm. Moisés Sanmarón Puig, whose artistic name was Villèlia, was a sculptor linked to the abstract movement, who initially identified with the artistic concerns of the Dau al Set group. He learned wood carving in the workshop of his father, a renowned craftsman, and during his childhood he received a rationalist education, which was interrupted by the outbreak of the Civil War. After the war, his family moved from Barcelona to Mataró. He exhibited his work for the first time in 1949 at the Museum of Mataró. Four years later, after working with his father on the woodwork for the chapel of Santa Ana in the city, he decided to devote himself fully to sculpture. With a scholarship from the Institut Français in Barcelona, he moved to Paris in 1967. In the French capital he worked with perforated paper as the main material for his works. Two years later he went to Argentina, where his brother, also a sculptor, lived, and finally settled in Quito, where he remained until 1972. On returning to Spain, he moved to the village of Molló, in Girona, where he devoted himself to making surrealist sculptures in which he used willow wood and assemblages of objects, giving his works from this period a certain sense of humour. He died in 1994, and in 1999 the IVAM in Valencia devoted an extensive retrospective exhibition to him. He is currently represented at the MACBA in Barcelona, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Patio Herreriano in Valladolid.

APELES MESTRES OÑÓS (Barcelona, 1854 - 1936). "Peace and progress". Oil on canvas. Signed and titled in the lower right corner. Measurements: 75 x 102 cm; 94 x 220 cm (frame). The painting that we show has a great artistic, documentary and historiographic value. The Catalan painter Apeles Mestres displays here his particular mastery to compose a multitudinous and celebratory scene, a popular celebration before an anecdotal but significant event, the inauguration of the Monument to Peace that was erected at the end of what would be the Ramblas de Santa Monica, in Barcelona, in the year 1876. It was erected in the place now occupied by the monument to Columbus. The city council wanted to celebrate peace in a symbolic way, after the third and bloody Carlist war. Antoni Rovira i Trias was in charge of the monument, presided over by a female allegory flanked by lions on a staircase. Flags of Spain and Catalonia coexist in harmony. Men and women with barratinas dance sardanas, others carry bundles of straw. They are probably going to light a bonfire in honor of peace. In the distance, boats can be seen approaching the port and, on the other side, several chimneys are smoking. Children are running around. One is doing the vertical on his hands and his friends are singing. A group of men are waving flags. The anecdote is juicy and immense. A blue sky, without a cloud, enhances the colors of popular joy. Writer, cartoonist, painter, cartoonist and musician, Apelles Mestres was invested in 1908 with the title of Mestre en Gai Saber. He was also decorated with the Cross of the Legion of Honor of the French government (1920) and with the Gold Medal of the city of Barcelona. Apeles Mestresa (Barcelona, October 29, 1854-Barcelona, July 19, 1936) was a Spanish writer and cartoonist, notable figure of Catalan literature and precursor of the comic strip. Mestres, a multifaceted artist who cultivated poetry, music and theater, collaborated with cartoons in the periodical press of the time in addition to being a prolific illustrator of books. Progressive and linked to republicanism at certain stages of his life, he opposed the most conservative sectors of the Catalan literary scene, of which Mestres is considered a notable figure.
