A RARE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH MUSICAL AUTOMATION PICTURE CLOCK the gilt moulded frame enclosing an oil painting on canvas depicting a farriers shop with a church and clock in the background, there are seven automations to the dial with moving bellows, four of the figures, horses head and dogs tail, the front hinges up to reveal the clock movement, automation movement and striking movement, the large Swiss music cylinder playing 8 airs with original tune sheet, winding apertures to the sides with original key. [Rouen, manuscript, music] Cérémonial des religieuses hospitalières de la miséricorde de Jésus de l'ordre de Saint Augustin. Rouen, Jacques Le Boullenger, 1685. In-8, 148-[4]-136p. Very rare first edition (despite the presence of three copies in our sale) containing, in particular, all the music in the second part. This part was not printed, apart from the staves (probably for cost reasons). Interestingly, the handwritten music varies from copy to copy. Lots 319 and 320 are quite similar, but there are a few variants (probably copying errors), whereas 318 brings real musical variants. A handwritten table and supplement have been added at the end of the volume. The supplement is handwritten with a printed part glued in (probably 19th century). Full 19th-century basane, ornate spine, "monastic binding" looking rather amateurish, some leaves stained. Rare testimony of these nuns. This copy comes from the Augustinian nuns of Château-Gontier (former province of Anjou, present-day Mayenne).

It is finely carved with a lodge picture composed of two columns, the altar, bible, sun-moon, beehive, square, mallet, trowel, ladder and arch. Pontoon work made by French prisoners on English pontoons. Late 18th or early 19th century. 10 x 4.5 x 1.8 cm. Rare, good condition
