Lot 1081 - HANS SCHNIER IN SPEIR. AN EXTREMELY RARE 16TH CENTURY GILT TRAVELLING BOOK CLOCK - HANS SCHNIER IN SPEIR. AN EXTREMELY RARE 16TH CENTURY GILT TRAVELLING BOOK CLOCK dated 1583, the double fusee iron movement with brass plates striking on a bell and with alarm function, balance wheel verge escapement with iron squared baluster pillars, the book-shaped case with metal clasps, the hinged back and front pierced in the centre with a rosette and running animals finely chased; in the spandrels a grotesque mask in relief, the spine inscribed "HANS SCHNIER IN SPEIR, OPERA, 1583" and with the initials in a roundel either side of the city arms; the gilt dial engraved with twenty-four hour and double twelve Arabic numerals, touch pins on the circumference, alarm rose and single steel hand, portrait heads engraved above and below and spandrels similar to the cover, ring suspension above. - the clock was previously sold in Sotheby's in the famous Percy Webster collection on the 27th May 1954, lot 93. Comes with the original Sotheby's catalogue. (16cm high, 10cm wide, 6cm deep.) The movement originally had a 24 hours count wheel located in the circular reset cut in the back plate, under the 12 hours count wheel that is present. Both of this wheels engaged with a pinion that is there and working. The 24 hours count wheel has been removed many ears ago, so now strikes only the standard 12h . All the 12h strike system js there and working once activated. Alarm system is present original and working including the bell and the leavers that activates the alam underneath the dial. On the time part of the movement, all is complete, working but not keeping time due to age, original foliote balance staff. Hand, dial and all the motion work under the dial is original. The two holes located Straight above the balance are screw holes that hold the alarm from underneath. Lever located on the top right hand side is now disconnected, it use to change the strike from 12 to 24. The case has been regilded in the past and two of the spandrels are missing but could be cast from the originals.
