Very rare pair of figures. Chamba, Nigeria. H 26.5 and 34 cm. In abstract form, reddish in color, encrusted in places, with nails as eyes. Massive round shoulders, accentuating the respective sex. Such figures, of which only a few are known, were supposed to mediate between the ancestral spirits and the living. The Chamba (Camba) are a small ethnic group scattered in numerous small settlements in eastern Nigeria, south of the Benue River, and in the neighboring parts of Cameroon. Like the other ethnic groups in this area, the Chamba are also associated with the Jukun Empire, whose heyday is dated to the 16th and 17th centuries. During the 17th century, the Chamba probably migrated along the mountain range between Nigeria and Cameroon and settled with the Daka, Jukun and Mumuye.
