Helmet mask gelede. Yoruba, Nigeria. H 26cm. With a reddish-colored face, crested coiffure with numerous parallel rows of plaits, almond-shaped eyes and whitened elliptical scarification marks on the cheeks. Hairstyle, eyes and mouth are colored blue. A bluish striped bandeau encloses three-quarters of the head; probably from the area around Ketu. The Gelede festival in the southwest of Yorubaland invokes the fertility of the soil and the prosperity of men, but also honors the community of female forces of the cosmos and their social roles in general. Tear to the bandeau, otherwise intact. Provenance: ex Gorny & Mosch, auction 279, 2021, lot 785; ex collection K. W., Bavaria, before 1990.
