Large fish-shaped stirrup vessel from the Chavin Cupisnique culture. 1200 - 800 BC. H 30.1cm, L 34.6cm. Dark brown terracotta. Fish with plastically carved eyes, nose, mouth and caudal fin as well as protruding dorsal and lateral fins. Carved gills, scales and tail fin details. Large spout on the upper side, flattened underside as a base. Rare work of art from early pre-Columbian pottery! Cf. for example Binoche et Giquello, Paris auction Art Précolombien 19 December 2018, lot 91. A large restored crack in the front area on the underside up to the sides, with tiny chips retouched, surface slightly bumped on one side of the tail fin. Provenance: Ex collection Jens Knudsen, Hamburg, collection period 1980s to before 1999.
