Two bronze "spoons". Bactria, 4th century BC. Both consist of a flat sheet of metal with a sculpted handle ending in a snake's head. a) Almond-shaped, l 16 cm. b) Lancet-shaped, l 14.5 cm. Snake head bent open. 2 pieces! For these objects see V. Sarianidi, Die Kunst des Alten Afghanistans (1986) p. 208f. Presumably these were implements that had a ceremonial function. According to Sarianidi, remains of burnt knucklebones have been found on objects of this type. Green-brown patina, remains of sinter, intact. Provenance: Ex collection Dr. Klaus Marquardt, North Rhine-Westphalia, 1980s to 2009.
