On Friday, February 26th, the auction house Drouot Estimations will present a painting of Minnay, a small dog painted by Edouard MANET (1832-1883) around 1879. Still owned by the descendants of the dog’s owner Marguerite Lathuille, this portrait is unique and has remained unknown on the market for over 140 years. However, we can see it is included in the catalogue raisonné by Denis Rouart and Daniel Wildenstein (1975). The painting is estimated to reach €220 000 to €280 000.

Promptly sketched, as usual in Manet’s work, this portrait is from a series of 8 dog’s paintings  the artist created around 1875-1883.

He painted this one for Marguerite, whose father was Gauthier Lathuille, the owner of the inn « Chez le Père Lathuille ». Manet also painted, the same year, an eponymous painting, kept today at the Fine Arts Museum of Tournai. The innkeeper became close to the artist, and owned tree paintings of Manet, including a portrait of his daughter, exhibited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Lyon, a pastel portrait of his son Louis Gauthier and three drawings.

According to Paul Rosenberg’s letter sent to Marguerite in 1928, in which he implores her to sell the painting, Minnnay’s portrait already aroused lust on the market.
