1980s–90s Fashion and Jewellery: A Sale of Icons and Extravagance

N autilus will present, on 24 April at the Hôtel Drouot, its second auction dedicated to jewellery and fashion, bringing together a selection where iconic signatures and highly distinctive pieces come into dialogue, with a particular emphasis on a spectacular wardrobe from the 1980s and 1990s.

The second part of the sale reveals a particularly noteworthy ensemble, largely drawn from the personal collection of Punani, a drag artist brought to prominence through Drag Race France. Her universe, shaped by couture references and a distinctly theatrical aesthetic, is reflected in a selection where clothing becomes a true visual statement. The pieces on offer demonstrate a marked taste for sculptural silhouettes and glamour, engaging in a constant dialogue with the history of fashion and its most iconic figures.

John Galliano,
Black amazon-style suit
Estimate: €400 - 600

The 1980s and 1990s take centre stage, notably through creations by Thierry Mugler, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Claude Montana, Moschino and John Galliano, fully embodying the power dressing aesthetic. Several standout pieces directly reference emblematic figures of visual culture, including a corset similar to that worn by Kylie Minogue, a bustier associated with model Anna Bayle, and ensembles reminiscent of the bold style of Fran Fine in The Nanny.

Alexandre, Vauthier Haute couture,
Fall-Winter 2018/2019, passage 12.
Princess-line sheath dress
entirely embroidered with sequins, rhinestones and fur
Estimate: €800 - 1,000

This stylistic richness continues with high-calibre creations, among which a Haute Couture gown by Alexandre Vauthier (lot 282, estimate: €800 - 1,000), entirely embroidered with sequins, and an elegant equestrian-inspired suit by John Galliano stand out (lot 216, estimate: €400 - 600). These pieces rank among the most important in the sale, both for their craftsmanship and their striking visual impact.

Beyond this collection dedicated to high fashion, the sale also includes a selection of jewellery, presented at the beginning of the catalogue (lots 1 to 199). Among the highlights is a pair of diamond-set earrings, each suspending a pear-shaped emerald of approximately 9 carats (lot 107, estimate: €5,000–6,000), exemplifying a taste for refined and timeless design.

and each set with a pear-shaped emerald, approx. 9 ct.

Estimate: €5,000 - 6,000

While fashion forms the core of this sale, it nevertheless remains accessible, offering a wide range of lots through which collectors and enthusiasts alike may acquire distinctive pieces, reflecting a period when fashion boldly asserted its identity and expressive power.
