Lote 114 - BOREL (Pétrus). Champavert, immoral tales. Bruxelles, J. Blanche, 1872. In-8, XXXVI-334 pp. Half blond calf, spine ribbed, green mar. title page, date on tail, gilt head (contemporary binding). A fine copy with full margins of this second edition, illustrated with a fine etching frontispiece by Adrien AUBRY depicting a portrait of Pétrus Borel le Lycanthrope printed on Chine and an illustration by Gigoux et Garnier printed on Hollande out of the text. Minor scattered foxing. "Champavert, contes immoraux, contrary to what the subtitle suggests, offers more macabre and violent scenes than immoral situations. At least, what's striking here is the pathological nature of the stories. The high point is reached in the cruel tale entitled Don André Vésalius, l'anatomiste, where horror defies reason. It's safe to assume that Villiers de l'Isle-Adam read it with a passion."" Jean-Baptiste Baronian, Panorama de la littérature fantastique de langue française, p. 43. A whimsical, tormented character, a fierce republican, the soul of the Petit-Cénacle, a journalist, a colonial administrator and a cursed poet, Petrus Borel was sometimes reviled, sometimes praised, notably posthumously by André Breton and the Surrealists, who judged his works to be frenetic and revolutionary, and helped bring him out of the oblivion into which he had fallen (Vicaire I, 864).

Lote 141 - *LE PETIT (Claude). L'Heure du Berger. Demy-roman comique, ou roman demy-comique. Paris, Robinot, 1662. In-16 of [14] ff. 111-[3]-[2] pp. marbled basane, smooth spine decorated, title page, red pages (period binding). Tail cap missing, minor soiling to title. First edition of this rare and somewhat licentious work. It was reprinted by J. Gay, 1862. Attached is the 1664 edition by Ribou, Paris, small in-12, [2] ff. 80 pp. brown calf, ornate ribbed spine (period binding). "Facétie en prose mêlée de vers, fort gaie et tres spirituelle. Viollet-Leduc, in his Bibliothèque poétique, II, 160, is astonished that it is not better known. It is," he says, "a satirical painting of gallant mores now forgotten, but which still have their analogues, and whose comparison he feels should pique curiosity. This work was the first published by the unfortunate Claude Le Petit, who was hanged and burned in the Place de Grève in 1662 for impiety. It is clear that the terror inspired by this condemnation and execution reflected on L'Heure du berger, which no one dared to read since that time, despite the royal privilege it had been granted, and that it was the cause of the book's scarcity and the reluctance of enthusiasts [...] The reprint of 1862 did little to reassure them, as it was incriminated and condemned in Paris in 1869. [...] M. Victor Fournel said a few words about Le Petit's Heure du berger in his Introduction to Scarron's Roman comique (Bibliothèque Elzevir., Paris, Jannet, 1857, 2 vols.); he finds it a burlesque book, full of galimatias and bad taste, but not lacking in a certain wit; And he adds that the work should be seen as an alliance between the Gallic element and the Spanish influence, a protest of mocking common sense, of positive and mocking wit, against the subtleties, the refinements, the stilted and lying heroism of the Cyruses, Astrias and Polexanders, and against the false language and false sentiments of the pastorals. Le Petit dedicates his book: A Monseigneur, Monsieur ou Messire Zorobabel Pirondeski, Liber Baro Auff Camploskow, Graff Von Koxiska unt Chifrisko, Colonel d'un régiment de Visigots, pour le service de Son Altesse Sérénissime Chimin Janos, demy-duc de Transilvanie, et premier valet de Garde-Robe de défunt monsieur son père Ragoski, etc. The whole volume continues in this mocking tone. Le Petit's verses are generally elegant and correct" Gay (II, 472.)

Lote 153 - ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques). Genève, sn (Société typographique), 1781-1782. 9 volumes in-8, marbled basane, smooth spine decorated, tan and green marbled title pages (period binding). Covers and corners worn, gnawing at tail of first volume, spotting in places. One folding table. First 9 volumes of the Œuvres posthumes collection (complete in 15 volumes for the 2 supplements), containing one of the first editions of the first part of the Confessions (volumes VIII and IX) and the first edition of the Rêveries du Promeneur solitaire (volume IX). The original edition of the Confessions has been the subject of controversy according to various bibliographers, between the separate "large print" edition and volumes X (for the in-4 edition), XIX and XX (for the in-8 edition), XX and XXI (for the in-12 edition) of the Œuvres complètes collection, and volumes VIII and IX of the Œuvres posthumes, all dated 1782 in Geneva. Recent research, based on comments published in the June 1782 issue of the Journal Helvétique, tends to consider the separate edition of the first part of the Confessions to be the original. (Dufour 340; Rousseau, Œuvres complètes, T. I, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, Gallimard p. 1889; Tchemerzine X, 62-63).

Lote 179 - Italy - COCHIN (Ch. N.) & BELLICARD (J. Ch.). Second[e] edition. Paris, Jombert, Naples, Gravier, 1757. In-12, red jansenist morocco, ribbed spine, gilt title, interior lace, gilt edges (Belz-Niédrée). Small restored loss to title (after small loss of text). Third edition (after the original of 1754 and the following one of 1755) illustrated with 40 hors-texte plates, including 6 fold-outs + one additional double plate. The site of Herculaneum was excavated as early as 1738. This extraordinary event had a major impact throughout Europe, changing the way Roman antiquity was viewed at the time. During their tour of Italy with the Marquis de Marigny (Abel François Poisson de Vandières, brother of Madame de Pompadour), the architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot and Abbé Le Blanc (historiographer of the Bâtiments du Roi), Charles Nicolas Cochin, engraver, and Jérôme Charles Bellicart, architect, visited Naples in 1750 and marveled at the site of Herculaneum and the excavations. The work contains a history of the town and the location of the volcano, observations on the antiquities found in the excavations, a dissertation on the paintings and sculptures recovered and a description of some of the antiquities discovered in the Naples area. This artists' description of the Herculaneum ruins predates Winckelmann's work, which brought them to public attention. A precious copy in a signed binding.

Lote 181 - *Italy - PUBLIUS CORNELIUS SEVERUS L'Etna de P. Cornelius Severus et les Sentences de Publius Syrus, traduits en françois, avec des remarques [par Accarias de Sérionne][...] Paris, Chaubert et Clousier, 1736. In-12 brown basane, smooth ornate spine, title page, gilt fillet framing the boards, red tr. (period binding). Covers gnawed, leather missing, rubbed, corners worn. Rousseurs. Edition decorated with two folding plates (view of Etna and map of Sicily). Publius Cornelius Severus was a Latin poet and contemporary of Ovid. He died an untimely death. He left behind a fragment on the Death of Cicero. The Etna poem has been attributed to him, but Johann Christian Wernsdorf believes it is by Lucilius the Younger. Publilius Syrus (or, less correctly, Publius Syrus), born in Syria around 85 BC and died at an unknown date after 43 BC, was a Latin poet. Brought as a slave to Rome, named Syrus after his province of origin, he was educated and later freed by his master for his intellectual qualities, humor and talents. Along with Decimus Laberius, a Roman knight whom he is said to have defeated in a literary joust in Caesar's presence in 46 BC, he is the leading exponent of mimicry. Syrus outlived both Caesar and Laberius, and enjoyed great success in Rome. We owe him a series of mimes, two titles of which have survived. We can also read his Sentences, a series of aphorisms taken from his plays. They include maxims and piquant observations, such as "judex damnatur ubi nocens absolvitur" ("The judge is condemned when the guilty man is acquitted"). These maxims were still appreciated a century later by Seneca. (source Wikipedia).
