编号 81 - Seraphim Soudbinin (1867-1944) "Laughing gnome and grimacing gnome". Sculptural object in terra cotta in the form of an open pot with two handles and two sides. Signed Séraphin on the base and marked Paris. Underneath is a blue exhibition stamp and label (illegible). One of the feet glued back, and small chips. H. 22 cm W. 18 cm D. 17 cm Probably made around 1910. TR Soudbinine Séraphin Born in Russia, Séraphin was an extraordinary physical figure, powerful and tall. He started out as a frothy sailor on the Volga, became an opera singer through his contact with Chaliapine and a theater actor, before finally settling in Paris in 1904, where he set his sights on sculpture. In 1910, he was noticed by Apollinaire, who mentioned "a plaster head by M. Soudbinine, who makes humorous and colossal sculptures". For ten years, he became Rodin's practitioner, working with him on "La main de Dieu". He took part in all the major Parisian salons, including the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des artistes russes and the Société nationale des beaux-arts. In the early 1920s, he created a series of sculptures in natural, lacquered or gilded wood, with an architectural style in line with cubist principles, simplifying shapes and volumes. In 1923, a trip to the United States introduced him to Far Eastern ceramics. On his return, he met the ceramists of the day, close to Sèvres, set up a workshop and built his own kilns. He then applied his sculptural talent to this slightly different material, and quickly became one of the most subtle creators of the new Orient-inspired school of ceramics. After a busy life and career, he died in Paris.
