Carayon); 1 vol. (the last) in cream half-percaline with Bradel corners, brown title-piece with small lacks, gilt head, covers and spine preserved (A. Mertens). Complete collection, illustrated with 28 compositions by Henry Bellery-Desfontaines engraved by Froment (year 1898), 38 figures drawn and engraved by Florian (1899), 31 illustrations by Steinlen engraved by Froment père et fils (1900), 30 color compositions by Eugène Grasset engraved by Émile Froment (1901), 31 original woodcuts by Paul Colin (1902) and 47 figures by Louis Dunki engraved by Léon Perrichon (1903). The contributions are by renowned writers and bibliophiles, including Anatole France, Jules Claretie, Henri Beraldi, Clément-Janin, Pierre Dauze, Georges Vicaire and others. Among other interesting information, the first year gives the names and addresses of all members of the main bibliophile societies. Leading copies on China paper for the first 5 years, one of 100 (1898), then of 50 on this paper. The text of these copies has been reprinted. The bookbinder has mounted most of the publisher's advertisements and catalogs in fine. The last year, in Mertens bradel, is on wove paper. A very fine set of 6 volumes, 5 of which in a Carayon binding.

The title is printed in orange, blue, brown and red letters and is illustrated with a copper-engraved vignette depicting an allegory of printing. The preface is printed in orange, the first chapter (Des différentes Manieres de se servir de l'Éventail) in blue, the second chapter (Des Toilettes) in brown, the third chapter (Des Etiquettes) in red, and the last chapter (Testament De Messire Alexandre-Hercule Epaminondas) in orange. Barbier wrongly announces Duchesne's authorship in Paris, probably because he was sold there according to the advertisement in Volume III of the Année littéraire. X. de Theux de Montjardin's bibliographie liégeoise (Bruges, 1885, 585) relies on typographical elements for its assertion. This is the second edition, with only 110 pp. First state title page. Very rare catalog of Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy (1637-1687), imprimeur-libraire ordinaire du Roi (1651), survivor of his grandfather Sébastien I Cramoisy (1585-1669), director of the Imprimerie royale du Louvre (1660), sole imprimeur du Roi pour les monnaies, imprimeur de l'ordre de Cîteaux. Son of Paris merchant Pierre Mabre and grandson of printer-librarian Sébastien I Cramoisy, with whom he began a 5-year apprenticeship in Sept. 1652, and with whom he worked in partnership until Sébastien I's death in 1669. Received master's degree on March 6, 1659. Despite obtaining in 1672 a general privilege for customary books, renewed by the Archbishop of Paris in 1675, he often fell victim to provincial forgeries. Also author of numerous dedicatory epistles. Died in Paris in June 1687. His widow succeeded him, sometimes publishing works under her husband's name until 1698, when she liquidated the business (source BnF.)

The illustrations include 2 portraits (La Fontaine after Rigaud engraved by Ficquet and Eisen after Vispré engraved by Ficquet), 80 figures by Eisen engraved by Aliamet, Baquoy, Choffard, Delafosse, Flipart, Lemire, Leveau, de Longueil and Ouvrier and 4 vignettes and 53 culs-de-lampe by Choffard, the last of which contains his portrait. The figures of Le Cas de conscience and Le Diable de Papefiguière are uncovered. Volume 1: paper very lightly browned in places, small scattered foxing, small tear in upper margin of first plate of Le Faucon, large modern bookplate pastedown on first and last endpapers and on recto of portrait, handwritten note in ink and pencil (19th century) on verso of 0-title. In volume 2, very small angular loss on pp. 37-38, very light foxing in places and a few pages very slightly browned. "Among the illustrated books of the 18th century, this edition of La Fontaine's tales, known as the Fermiers généraux edition because they paid for it, is the most beautiful and pleasing overall; it is also Eisen's masterpiece. As a result, [...], it is highly sought-after and expensive, especially when the proofs are first-rate, and the binding is elegant and well-executed."
