Paris, Daniel Horthemels, 1689. In-4, tan calf, ornate ribbed spine, marbled edges (period binding). First edition, illustrated with a title vignette, 2 vignettes and 6 folding engraved plates (botany and zoology). A good copy. Stamped with A. Briere Résident supérieur en Annam. Some spotting.

Lot 1038 - THEVENOT (Jean de). Travels in Europe, Asia & Africa. Amsterdam, Michel Charles Le Cene, 1727. 5 volumes in-12, tan calf, ornate ribbed spines, red morocco title-pieces, red edges (period binding). Illustrated with 2 engraved frontispieces, a portrait of the author in Ottoman dress, 48 engraved plates including 11 fold-outs, and a fold-out plate with the Malabar alphabet. Determined to travel the world, Thévenot left France in 1652 for England, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy. In 1655, he was in Rome, from where he left for Malta and Constantinople. He then travelled to the Greek islands, and Egypt, where he stayed for almost a year. He returned to Palestine, and after being attacked by privateers, returned to France in 1659. In 1663, he returned to Alexandria, Palestine and Persia. From there he went on to India, and died in Armenia on the way back. The first two volumes contain the account of his voyage to the Levant, which he published on his return to France. Volumes 3 to 5 contain the account of his second voyage to the Levant and that of his voyage to the East Indies, published from his notebooks, probably by Pétis de La Croix père. A fine copy.

Paris, Hachette, 1860-1894. 63 vol. in-4, red percaline and various bindings (period binding). Some foxing and dampening, some minor spotting. Head of the collection (1860-1894) of this famous travel magazine. It continued until 1914. This magazine played a major role in popularizing travel. Indeed, this was the period of the great colonial and scientific expeditions, and many travel reports are published here for the first time. The abundant iconography makes this rich magazine easy to read. The collection includes the following features: 1864 lacks 1st semester; 1866 red half-chagrin, ornate ribbed spine; 1870-1871, there are two volumes for the 2 years (complete); 1872 blue half-basane, ornate ribbed spine, bound in 1 volume; 1886-1887 red half-chagrin, ornate ribbed spine, bound in 2 volumes; alphabetical table 1860-1888; 1888 lacks 1st semester; 1892 to 1894 green half-chagrin, ornate ribbed spine, bound in 3 volumes.

Los 1050 - Games. Jeu des fables de La Fontaine. [Paris], Simonin Cuny, [c. 1890]. Nicely illustrated cardboard box (35 x 42 x 6 cm). Lotto board game complete with 6 lotto cards with 48 tokens, 9 pictures, 2 baskets, game rules and a collection of fables. The chromolithographed cover features the fabulist surrounded by animals in a medallion. This game was published by Simonin Cuny, a Paris publisher at the end of the 19th century. He was the creator of board games, card games, puzzles, question-and-answer games, and small games of balance and skill, all marked with his initials "S.C.". A good copy. The box is in need of restoration, as the lid, which is not missing, is partly detached, as is the bottom.

First edition: the work can be seen as a development of Lettre et réflexion sur la fureur du jeu (1775, second edition in 1777). Jean Dusaulx himself had been seized by this all-consuming passion during his long stays in garrison at Cassel, then at Lunéville (he was Commissaire des Guerres). It eventually ruined him. Very small loss at tail cap, otherwise a superb copy.
