Lot 247 - GUEZ de BALZAC (Jean-Louis): Lettres familières de monsieur de Balzac à monsieur Chapelain. Paris, augustin Courbé, 1656. One volume. 7.5 by 14 cm. (14)-522 pages. Contemporary full vellum, titled in ink on spine. Small but not serious loss of vellum at bottom of spine, otherwise good condition of binding and copy. Same year as the posthumous original, produced by Guillaume Girard in accordance with the wishes of Guez de Balzac, who wrote the address to the Marquis de Montauzier, which is present in our copy. One of the works that made the glory of Jean-Louis de Balzac, a man of letters famous for the brilliance of his style, and who contributed, at the beginning of the seventeenth century, to the improvement of the French language. It should be remembered that Balzac used to address his friends, under the title of "lettres", short essays on philosophical subjects, in the highly polished style for which he was renowned.

One volume. 18.5 by 26.5 cm. (4)-XIV-562 pages. Paperback, in printed cover, uncut. Spine broken with small paper tears, very rare foxing. Bāber, the founder in India of the Mughal dynasty, was a Chaghātai Turk, who, through his father, descended from Timūr-Lang (Tamerlan). Abu al-Ghazi Bahadur was a khan of the Khiva khanate from 1643 to 1663, famous for his historical work Genealogy of the Turks. Mir-Ali-Chir-Nevâï, a Perso-Uzbek philosopher and poet of the Chaghataï language, translator into Turkish of The Language of Birds, written in Persian. A rare book.

A native of Nîmes, Verdet was one of the most remarkable physics teachers of the mid-19th century. He lectured at the Ecole normale supérieure, the Ecole polytechnique and the Faculté des sciences. (6)-621-(3) ; (2)-619-(1) pages. Bound in contemporary full calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red morocco title-pieces. Traces of wetness on the 1st plate of volume 1, epidermis on the 2nd plate, the lower spine and lower head are missing from volume two. Binding with arms. "In 1724, he published a Traité de la pesanteur universelle, in which he explained all the phenomena of the Universe by two principles: the gravity of bodies, which caused everything to tend towards rest, and the activity of spirits, which incessantly created movement". In France, he was one of the main opponents of Newton's theory of gravitation. An interesting text by a scientist famous for his bold and original, if not accurate, hypotheses. Rare book

(16)-806-(2)-(31) pages. Antique full vellum with overlay. Two small vellum tears at top of spine and on one flap. Very good condition inside, despite paper tending to brown. "Prosperi Alpini, Italian physician and botanist, was born in Marostica in 1553, and died in Padua in 1617. To expand his medical knowledge, he left Venice for Egypt in 1580, spending three years in Cairo, visiting the banks of the Nile, Alexandria and the Greek islands. On his return to Italy in 1586, he became physician to Admiral Doria, and spent some time in Genoa. He returned to Padua in 1593, where he became director of the botanical garden. Prosperi Alpini was one of the leading naturalists of his time". Uncommon first edition. As a botanist, Alpini was the first to describe the coffee tree. As a physician, he offered with this work the first modern semiotic treatise (i.e. the branch of medicine that studies the signs and symptoms of a sick subject). Even in the 18th century, the great Dutch physician Boerhaave, who edited numerous editions, was firmly convinced that this work should be recommended to all students. Paper sometimes slightly scorched. First edition. The financial distress of the nobility in the 17th century Bourgeois et André, S.H.F. 808. "Jean Hérault, who later became Seigneur de Gourville, is a typical example of a man of humble origins who, in the 17th century, made his fortune in finance by means that were often unscrupulous. Born on the lands of the Duc de La Rochefoucauld, he entered the service of his family and spent ten years as butler to the author of the memoirs, following him during the Flanders War and the Fronde. In contact with members of the highest nobility, whose fortunes he skilfully administered and whom he occasionally helped with his money, he never forgot his own particular interests: as quartermaster in the army of Catalonia, where he met Fouquet, then as general collector of sizes in Guyenne, he was able to enrich himself quickly and greatly. Having already been locked up in the Bastille in 1655, he fled to Burgundy and then abroad when Fouquet was disgraced. The services he rendered to the King in his dealings with the Dukes of Brunswick and Hanover made people forget his death sentence in absentia, and Gourville was able to return to France in 1668. Edition of 699 copies, this one of 600 on Arches wove paper, n°439. A classic, with illustrations as admirable as ever.

Full ochre binding with Arabic flap, boards decorated with cold decoration, and adorned in the center with a beige leather inlay, decorated with cold decoration. Edition on very fine paper, the pages beautifully framed in red, blue and gilt. Illuminated headbands. Two maps of the holy places. Binding a little faded, and with old traces of a corner stain (not serious). Last leaf missing at corner, with loss of a small part of the frame. Page edges occasionally worn, but not missing. Despite these defects, a fine work. With the help of Mr. Abdelkrim Daoud, Belgian collector of Islamic art.

Small worm hole on first cover, laces missing. Freckles, about twenty browned pages, light corner and marginal wetness on half the leaves. 1) The original edition of the translation is 1604. F. Hennebert, Histoire des traductions françaises d'auteurs grecs et latins pendant les XVIe et XVIIe siècles, pp. 151-152. This translation, although from the early 17th century, is still linked to the language of the previous century: "The language he speaks is still that of Amyot. [...] To judge him impartially, we must compare him with the writers whose traditions he has followed. The translation of the works of the Stoic philosophers in the early 17th century was a continuation of their appropriation by Christians. 2) The original edition dates from 1623. The author, Seneca the Rhetor, father of Seneca the Philosopher, gives a compilation of Latin rhetorical exercises: controversies and suasoires. The former were of the legal kind, aimed at proving the innocence or guilt of an accused person, while the latter were of the deliberative kind: advising the useful and advising against the harmful. The work is an important source for knowledge of Latin rhetoric.

Motto with a sonnet to Monseigneur le maréchal de Vivonne vice-roy de Sicile, after the glorious expedition to Palermo, where this marshal burned a large number of ships, galleys, & other bastimens of the enemy army on June 2, 1676. S.l.n.d. [1676]. One fascicle. 23.5 by 35.5 cm. 3 pages. Modern Bradel-style boards, brown titles. Perfect condition of binding, very good condition inside (traces of old folds). Long autograph letter from the author: "Pour Monsieur De Bauchamp demeurant à la rüe de la Dorade en Avignon, par son très humble et très obéissant serviteur, De Cellières". Very rare first edition. The CCFr. lists only one copy (B.M. de Lyon); the Worldcat lists no other; unknown to De Backer and Sommervogel. Jesuit Father Laurent de Cellières, born in 1630 in Saint-Didier-la-Seauve (Haute-Loire), entered the novitiate in 1645. For 22 years, he taught grammar, humanities, rhetoric, philosophy and mathematics. He died [...] between 1721 and 1726. These two texts glorify the Maréchal de Vivonne, who on June 2, 1676, partially destroyed the Spanish-Dutch fleet anchored off Palermo.

Each volume has a title leaf, included in the pagination. That of volume 2 reads "depuis MDCCLIII jusqu'à MDCCLXII". The 1st edition dates from 1771. This edition contains 163 apocryphal letters. "These letters were originally attributed to Crébillon Fils. Since then, and as they are very well written, they are considered to be a youthful work by Marquis Barbé-Marbois, born in 1745 and died in 1837. Small wetness in the lower margin of the first 10 ff. of the 1st work, otherwise very good condition. Interesting combination of two works refuting the positions of the Venetian Republic, which contested the Pope's temporal power. 1) Ferrara printing, published the same year as the original. Rare. IT \ICCU \UBOE\ 117769. The Republic of Venice commissioned Paolo Sarpi and various theologians, including Marsili, to defend its policies. They published two incendiaries, which Bellarmin refutes in this work, first published in Rome in 1606 and reprinted the same year in the main cities of the Papal States. This Ferrara edition is rare: the ICCU locates only 3 copies. 2) Edition published the same year as the original in-4. IT \ICCU \UBOE\021629. Sarpi also published his considerations on Paul V's censorship, denouncing it. Father Bovio, provincial of the Carmelite order, responded with this work, in which he justifies Venice's excommunication.

Otherwise very good condition for this sober but stylish binding. Reunion of two charming volumes with engraved figures by Cochin. 1) First edition. C. Michel, Cochin et le livre illustré au XVIIIe s., n° 191. "Robbé asked his uncle Despille for four illustrations and had them engraved by their friend Cochin. The four drawings attributed without convincing reason to Cochin are in the Louvre." (C. Michel). In satirical verse, the author recounts his picaresque adventures on the road from Jonzac to Orléans, via Saintes, Chinon, Tours, Amboise and Blois. The third song features an apparition of Rabelais, who invites the author to pay him a visit. 2) First edition. C. Michel, Cochin et le livre illustré au XVIIIe s., no. 195. "Four vignettes of children's games, drawn by Pierre, engraved by Cochin fils. Nine in-8 size prints, 1 frontispiece and 8 plates drawn by M. Pierre, eight of which etched by M. Watelet, to which M. Cochin fils gave a few touches in different places on the varnish, before making them bite, & then made a few repeats with the burin in the places missed by the etching. Courtiz de Sandras, who was himself a musketeer and met Besmaux, d'Artagnan's companion, published these "memoirs" in 1700, in which the true and the false are interwoven, and which DUMAS used for his novels.

Louis XVI accepted it on September 141, swore allegiance to it and transformed France from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy. The Constitution abolished the notion of divine right, which gave the king absolute power over France. From then on, the king had to take an oath before the nation, swearing to uphold and enforce the Constitution; he now bore the title of King of the French" Wikipedia. VII, pp. 9-20), gave a fairly favorable review of these two brochures: "These two pamphlets, by a very well-educated man who writes with great facility, do not entirely fulfill their title. Assignats are discussed, but not more particularly than the other subjects the author reviews, the main ones being the organization of the Ministry of Finance, that of the committees of the National Assembly, the balance to be established between revenue and expenditure, and a fairly severe critique of the operations of the National Constituent Assembly on all these points." Paperback, in printed cover, untrimmed, as issued. Minor flaws on spine and cover edges, rare light foxing. First edition. "First edition of the travel account of Israel Joseph Benjamin (1818-1864), born in Falticeni, Moldavia, who, after losing money at the age of 25, decided to travel in search of the Lost Ten Tribes, leaving behind his pregnant wife and 5-year-old son. Introducing himself as Binyamin ha-Sheni (The Second Benjamin), the medieval Benjamin of Tudela (12th century) being the first, he describes his travels to Jewish communities in the Near East, Central Asia and North Africa. Travelling through Turkey, Eretz-Israel, Syria, Armenia, Iraq, Kurdistan, India, Afghanistan, Singapore, China, Iran and Egypt, he described not only the economic and social conditions of the various Jewish communities, but also many of the local legends associated with tombs, caves and so on. In Morocco, he recorded a detailed version of the story of the martyrdom of Sol (Suleika) Hachuel of Tangier (1817-1834), whose ordeal resonated throughout Europe in the mid-nineteenth century.

Binding signed PAGNANT. Perfect condition, except for a small rub on the 1st cover (not serious). First edition of this great text by LAMENNAIS, a powerful manifesto in favor of a social Catholicism based on a humanistic reading of the Gospels. The work predicts the assumption of a generous, fraternal people, in contrast to a narrow, mediocre bourgeoisie. Le Livre du peuple continued the scandal provoked by Paroles d'un croyant (1834), condemned by the Vatican as soon as it appeared.

Contemporary full basane, spine with 5 ornate bands, red title page. Discreet spotting, otherwise good condition. A few discreet freckles. A famous treatise first published in 1704, here in an enlarged edition. The author, Brother François Le Gentil, was a Carthusian monk at the Chartreuse de Vauvert in Paris. In the 18th century, this Carthusian monastery (destroyed during the French Revolution) boasted an exceptional orchard, with a wide variety of fruit made famous by the inventiveness of its monk gardeners.
