26 by 40 cm. Frontispiece-portrait-VIII-682 pages plus color folding map; (2)-326-(2)-337 to 671 pages. Contemporary full white vellum. A few minor stains, loss of a title-piece, otherwise very good condition of the binding. A few leaves slightly foxed, old restorations not missing on the title page of volume 1, small light marginal wetness on about ten leaves, otherwise very good condition. Pagination changes from 326 to 337, with no gaps. New edition of this famous Bible, revised by Jean-Frédéric Ostervald after David Martin's translation of the Olivétan Bible. Ostervald completed his version in 1744, and it became the most widely used Bible in Protestant churches until the end of the nineteenth century. Its interest lies in the commentaries and reflections Ostervald added. The edition is illustrated with a copperplate frontispiece by Billé after Le Barbier, a copperplate portrait of Ostervald after Henchoz, a vignette at the head of Genesis and a large color map. These two compositions by Le Barbier are first editions, each dated 1778. Bonne's folded color map of the twelve tribes of Israel is taken from an Atlas published in Paris by Lattré. The New Testament has its own title but continuous pagination, unlike previous editions. A rare edition of this renowned Protestant Bible.

Privat d'Anglemont explored Paris by night with the same spirit of adventure, the same appetite for discovery that one might feel for more distant lands." (Jean-Pierre A. The first two books, devoted to the press, and the third, devoted to Parisian entertainment (theaters, cafés-concerts, etc.), provoked the strongest complaints in the world and in the newspapers because of the violence they contained [...]. Louis Veuillot often painted his characters under assumed names. We find Passionnard d'Auvergne (Jules Vallès), Eliassin Lupus (Albert Wolff), Amanda Pigeonnier (Marie Colombier), Passe-Partout (Adrien Marx), Lilia (George Sand) [...]." Los 110 - KIRCHER (Athanasius): Athanasii Kircheri fuldensis Buchonii E soc. Iesu Prodromus coptus sive ægyptiacus. Rome, Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, 1636. One volume. 16 by 24 cm. 340 pages. Contemporary full vellum with the arms of Cardinal Lorenzo Magalotti (Fasced Or and Sable on a chief Gules charged with the motto "LIBERTAS" in letters Or.), with double framing and spandrels, ornate spine. Small nibble at bottom of upper board (minor defect), missing laces. Two small traces of light marginal dampening. Very rare foxing. Several leaves browned. Otherwise a very fine copy, in a well-preserved quality binding. First edition of this work on the Coptic language by the German Jesuit Athanasius KIRCHER (1602-1680), with a vignette on the title page bearing the coat of arms of Cardinal Barberini (Bishop of Ferrara), to whom the book is dedicated. KIRCHER was a physicist, mathematician, orientalist, cabalist and philologist. The book is the first published grammar of the Coptic language. It is to Kircher, Champollion would say, that "learned Europe owes in some way the knowledge of the Coptic language." The volume includes numerous passages printed in Coptic, Hebrew, Syriac and Chinese characters. It is illustrated with woodcut figures in the text. Cardinal Lorenzo Magalotti, whose coat of arms adorns the binding, was related to Pope Urban VIII, maffeo Barberini, as his brother Carlo Barberini had married Lorenzo's very devout sister, Costanza. Magalotti was therefore a member of the Barberini family, to whom the book is dedicated. The word LIBERTAS on the chief is very rare in ecclesiastical heraldry, as mottoes are usually placed lower down, on a scroll and below the coat of arms. This exception stems from the Magalotti family's participation in Florence's resistance against Pope Gregory XI, in 1535-1536. As a result of this involvement, the Magalotti coat of arms was enriched with the motto LIBERTAS, which this glorious past later protected, despite what it says about their opposition to the papacy. The blazon on the binding is thus linked to KIRCHER's patron family, the Barberini... Thanks to scholar P. S. for his help with this heraldic research.

24.5 by 39 cm. (42)-532-CCXXIII pagesand 2 maps, 15 plates including one double, 11 engraved bands; (44)-524-CCCXXX pages, and 24 engraved plates and 7 engraved bands; (20-596-CCCLXXII pages, and 7 engraved plates and 6 engraved bands. Contemporary full calf, 6-rib spine, ornate caissons, lace on edges. The binding has been recently restored, and has a number of defects. Nevertheless, it remains solid and presentable. The first 3 or 4 leaves of each volume are damaged in the center, with occasional loss of text. This appears to be the result of an early and disastrous chemical attempt to erase handwritten ownership from the title pages. Otherwise suitable inside. Our copy features 2 maps, 46 plates (including three double plates) and 24 headbands. One double plate has a tear at the fold without missing. The book's iconography is particularly valuable, as it shows many monuments that have now disappeared. Seals, tombs and other architectural elements are also reproduced. Volume III contains two magnificent portraits of Philippe Le Hardy and his son Jean, Duke of Burgundy. First edition of the most monumental work on the history of Burgundy. Dom Plancher wrote the first two volumes alone, and the third with the help of Dom Salazar. The fourth volume, absent from our copy, is not by him but by Dom Villevieille; it was published by Dom Merle in 1781, 33 years after volume 3.

Bound with: NOCRION, conte Allobroge. 7.5 by 13.8 cm. (4)-162-(2); (2)-209-(2); 201-(2) pages. Followed by 36 pages. Contemporary full marbled basane, 5-rib ornate spine, red title page, roulette on edges. Two 3.5 cm cracks on the spines, without affecting the solidity of the work. Some freckling, and a few pages with pale marginal wetness. Nocrion has browned paper. Otherwise a good copy. Les Bijoux indiscrets is a libertine novel published anonymously by Denis Diderot in 1748. The edition was clandestine, with no publisher's name, but it was published by the bookseller Laurent Durand. Our copy is from the second edition, published with a slightly different title. A rare book... This allegory, Diderot's first work of fiction, depicts Louis XV as Sultan Mangogul of the Congo, who receives from the genie Cucufa a magic ring that possesses the power to make women's vulvas ("jewels") speak. While most of the novel focuses on the different types of ladies of the Court and of the world, whether prudish or coquettish, English or Turkish, there is also room for debates on the ideas at work in French society at the time: praise for Voltaire, the history of mathematics, the fate of the Jansenists, and more. DIDEROT appears in this text combining humor and philosophy... Nocrion is a tale attributed to Thomas-Simon GUEULETTE. It is an erotic tale, the 1st edition of which appeared in 1747. Probably a forgery. No title page (if there was one...).

GILBERT DE VOISINS (Pierre): Mémoires sur les moyens de donner aux protestans un état civil en France. Composed by order of King Louis XV. S.l., 1787. One volume. 12.5 by 19.5 cm. (4)-143 pages. Société d'histoire du protestantisme; I.N.E.D. n° 2030. Very important memoir commissioned by Louis XV, proposing to give Protestants civil status, twenty years before the Edict of Toleration. Pierre Gilbert de Voisins (1684-1769), avocat général at the Parlement de Paris and Conseiller d'Etat, was an exemplary practitioner and a magistrate loyal to the King. "To find a middle way which, while maintaining the public ban on the Reformed religion, would grant Protestants both freedom of conscience and the means to benefit from civil status. This project concerns the private and domestic acts of their religion, the baptism and education of their children, and their marriage." (I.N.E.D.). 3. Les Voeux d'un Patriote. Amsterdam, 1788. One volume. 12 by 19.5 cm. 16-282 pages. Modern bradel boards. False title missing. Very good condition. 9th edition (E.O.: 1689). Kappler, Biblio. de Jurieu p. 427; Bourgeois et André, S.H.F. 3084. Work falsely attributed to Jurieu. Probably by Michel Le Vassor. "Famous pamphlet attributed to Jurieu or, better, to the historian Michel Levassor. It consists of fifteen memoirs, composed between August 10, 1689 and September 15, 1690. The first three deal with the oppression and tyranny under which all the orders of France groan, and the misery to which they are reduced by despotism. The next two outline how the French court has established its absolute power and abuses. Then, in memoirs 6-8, the author argues that the crown was elective and the Salic law worthless, that the Estates General are the repositories of power and superior to the king, and that the Parlement was created to represent these Estates and put a brake on the court. Memoirs 9 and 10 speak of the grand council, the mayors of the palace, the constable, the peers, dukes, counts, etc., who were once independent and are now slaves. The author shows (no. 11) that France initially had neither regulated troops nor taxes, and finally examines at length (nos. 12 to 15) how the monarchy could be restored to its former state. All in all, this is an indictment of absolutism, to which the writer contrasts the rights of the people. Published in 1788....

This singular brochure, in which the author predicts that the storming of the Bastille will trigger an economic crisis in Paris, is very famous thanks to Camille Desmoulins' denunciation of it in his Discours de la lanterne aux Parisiens (pp. 30-39). "It remains to warn you against the venom of some motions made in the National Assembly, & against some writings circulating in the capital. Among these dangerous pamphlets, there is a rather piquant one, entitled Le Triomphe des Parisiens..." "Previously 1st published, London, 1736, as Geoffroy's "A treatise of the fossil vegetable, and animal substances that are made use of in physick", which purports to be based upon a ms. of the author's lectures. American plants include balsam of Peru, cacao, ipecacuanha, Jamaica pepper, Virginian snakeroot, etc." (European Americana). "Etienne-François Geoffroy, a native of Paris, was a master apothecary and doctor of medicine in Paris. Geoffroy proposed a classification of chemical substances according to their greater or lesser "disposition to unite" with a reference substance. The idea that some substances could unite more easily than others was not new, but Geoffroy took credit for bringing together all available information in a large general table, later called the affinity table. The controversy between him and Louis LEMERY, one of his colleagues at the Académie, bears witness to the new way of practicing science, with everyone putting forward a conjecture that they tried to corroborate with experiments, and proposing new experiments to refute the opposing conjecture. This new art of scientific debate was to provide a solid foundation for the emerging science of chemistry.

It was founded by publicists of the liberal party to replace the Mercure de France, stripped of its privilege. It appeared in weekly installments, dealing more with politics than literature, and professing the same independent principles in both. La Minerve's main editors were Benjamin Constant, Jay, Etienne, Jouy, Tissot, Lacretelle and others. The capital piece, [apart from Benjamin Constant's articles], was the Lettres d'Etienne, who took pleasure in seeking out the news from Paris in foreign newspapers, and transcribing from English things that one would not have dared to insert at first in a French gazette. The liveliness with which La Minerve supported the struggle against the powers that be has led to it being called "the Menippean satire of the Restoration". La politique" remained, at least until his election as deputy for Sarthe on March 26, 1819, the work of Constant, who published a total of 99 articles. It includes some of his best texts, notably the "Lettres sur les Cent-Jours", published for the first time (see issue 56), and his analysis of Madame de Staël's "Considérations" (see next issue). 2) Last three volumes (out of 5 published) of the Mercure de France. These three volumes cover the period from July 5, 1817 to January 1818. At the end of the last volume, we have bound some of the issues of volume II (May 31, 1817 to June 1817). Volume V is extremely rare. The first volume appeared in January 1817. "First major liberal periodical since the Hundred Days." Its principal editor was Benjamin Constant. Following volume 9 of La Minerve, we have bound the 11th volume of Lettres Normandes, sent to subscribers of La Minerve Française to complete their subscription (cf. Hatin p. 336).

Enriched with a signed autograph letter from Georges VICAIRE to his friend J. B. PONCET. Le Viandier is a French recipe book from the late Middle Ages (late 14th century), associated with the name of Guillaume Tirel, known as Taillevent, master chef to the French kings Charles V and Charles VI. The oldest known manuscript, that of Sion, from the 13th century, proves that it actually predates him. It is a reworking of an even earlier work on the "art of the violin maker". In the middle of the 16th century, the viandier was still a tradesman, involved in running and supplying a food store, selling and supplying often wholesale, sometimes retail, to his customers and buying from a collection network, managing a precious stock of consumable foodstuffs. He may be self-employed, or an employee of a company for whom he is responsible. The word "meat" is used in the ancient sense of the classical Latin word, vivenda, meaning food, various kinds of nourishment, provisions for the mouth, food in general. (Wikipedia)
