A LARGE DEHUA PORCELAIN FIGURE OF GUANYIN, HE CHAOZONG MARK A LARGE DEHUA PORCELAIN FIGURE OF GUANYIN, HE CHAOZONG MARK China, Republic period (1912-1949). Delicately potted and sensitively modeled, the Goddess of Mercy standing atop two lotus blossoms above swirling waves, holding a ruyi scepter in her hand, and wearing gracefully flowing robes richly adorned with beaded jewelry, her serene face with downcast eyes, the neatly incised hair piled up into an elaborate coiffure behind a tiara with three Amitabha Buddhas, covered overall in a creamy ivory-white glaze. Inscriptions: To the back, within a double gourd ‘Dehua’ and a square seal ‘He Chaozong’. Provenance: Lithuanian private collection. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, tiny chips to exposed areas, and one finger reattached. Export permit: A copy of an export permit from the Department of cultural heritage at the ministry of culture, Lithuania, dated 19 March 2024, signed, no. CC 003718, accompanies this lot. Weight: 19.2 kg Dimensions: 88.2 cm Figures of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy or the Bodhisattva of Compassion, depicted holding ruyi are particularly auspicious. The Goddess of Mercy neatly modeled in fine blanc-de-chine porcelain, seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base with furling petals, a pair of hands held in front of the chest in uttarabodhi mudra and another on the lap cradling a pagoda, surrounded by innumerable radiating hands. The face with a serene expression and a gentle smile under arched brows over heavy-lidded eyes. The hair tied in a high chignon and elegantly falling in strands down the shoulders, the head surmounted by a foliate tiara centered by an image of the seated Buddha Amitabha, two raised hands supporting another larger seated Buddha, flanked by two further hands holding the sun and the moon. Inscriptions: To the back of the tiara, ‘Buddha’. Provenance: The Collection of José M. Neistein, and thence by descent in the family. José Menache Neistein (1934-2020), a distinguished expert in aesthetics, was born in São Paulo in 1934. He obtained his doctorate in philosophy with a thesis on aesthetics at the University of Vienna, Austria, demonstrating his outstanding intellectual abilities already as a young man. Throughout his illustrious career, Neistein has taught aesthetics at various universities and other institutions around the globe, inspiring countless students with his expertise and knowledge of the filed. Neistein's extensive research on literature, theater, and visual arts has been widely recognized, with his articles published in Germany, Austria, the United States and South America. He has also authored several books on art, solidifying his position as a leading authority in the field.
