A SIGNED SURIMONO WITH ISE-EBI A SIGNED SURIMONO WITH ISE-EBI Japan, dated 1841 Color woodblock print on paper. Signed Shunnen. The surimono depicts an ise-ebi (spiny lobster) in a straw wrapper. Accompanied by a photocopy of the surimono along with German translations. SIZE of the sheet 18.3 x 26.3 cm Condition: Good condition with wear. Some creasing, few folds, wormholes, and few stains. Gently mounted on a cardboard with a descriptive label. Provenance: From the private collection of Thomas Padua, Mühldorf, Germany. Thomas Padua was an artist and collector of Japanese woodblock prints who exhibited his surimono collection at the Olaf Gulbransson Museum, in ‘Glückwünsche aus Kyoto: Japanische Shijo-Surimono aus der Sammlung Thomas Padua,’ 3 November 2013 to 26 January 2014. Surimono, literally "printed matter", are high-quality, limited-edition, privately commissioned, woodblock-printed "greeting cards," mainly produced between the 1790s and the 1830s, and usually ordered for New Year's greetings. Surimono usually paired poetic texts with images, and both were typically intended to carry the cachet of "insider knowledge" for a cultured and well-educated audience.
