A SIX-PANEL BYOBU SCREEN FEATURING SCENES INSPIRED BY WOODBLOCK PRINTS A SIX-PANEL BYOBU SCREEN FEATURING SCENES INSPIRED BY WOODBLOCK PRINTS Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) or slightly later Ink, watercolors, gold paint, gouache, and sprinkled gold on paper. Mounted on paper on six wood panels with a black-lacquer frame and chased metal fittings. The first and second panel painted with two Heike generals, Sasaki Takatsuna and Kajiwara Kagesue, on their horses, crossing the Uji River which signaled the beginning of the first Battle at Uji Bridge. The third and fourth panel, are inspired by the woodblock prints by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912), depict Miura Daisuke Yoshiaki and the Minamoto retainer Kajiwara Kagetoki waiting for the Taira. The fifth panel, inspired by the woodblock print by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912), depicts Princess Minazuru, secretly giving a scroll to the young nobleman Ushiwakamaru, the future Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The sixth panel, inspired by the woodblock print by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912), depicts Lady Tokiwa and her three sons escaping through the snow from Kyoto to nearby Fushimi after her husband Minamoto no Yoshitomo was murdered. TOTAL SIZE 376 x 171.5 cm Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear, few stains, and some flaking. Fresh colors. The hinges slightly loose. Minimal wear to the verso.
