A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A SARUMAWASHI (MONKEY TRAINER), EDO A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A SARUMAWASHI (MONKEY TRAINER), EDO Unsigned Japan, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Boldly carved, the charming monkey trainer seated with one knee propped up, resting his shaved head on his arm, with a small monkey clinging to his back. The face of the trainer is jovial, his eyes wrinkling as he smiles, while the monkey looks slightly nervous, its brows raised and eyes wide. The man wearing the typical robes of his craft and a belt with a small woven pouch secured to the back. Large himotoshi to the side and underside. HEIGHT 3.8 cm Condition: Very good condition with wear, old nicks, and small scratches to the underside and himotoshi. Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Ferdinand and Dr. Gudrun Thaler-Szulyovsky, and thence by descent in the same family. The couple, who had both been practicing law, met in 1967 through their mutual passion for art. Together they built a substantial and diverse art collection over many decades.
