A FINE NANAKO SHAKUDO TSUBA AND KOZUKA DEPICTING THE BATTLE OF UJI A FINE NANAKO SHAKUDO TSUBA AND KOZUKA DEPICTING THE BATTLE OF UJI Unsigned Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The tsuba of naga-marugata shape, kozuka hitsu-ana, finely worked on a nanako (ring punched) ground with shakudo, silver, and gold takazogan and takabori; depicting a samurai on horseback standing on the banks of a river, pointing his bow towards an oncoming ship. The reverse with a pine tree and chidori (plover). The kozuka finely worked in gold and shakudo takazogan, depicting a samurai riding his horse across turbulent waters near a coastal bank with a tall pine tree. The reverse gilt with nekogaki (cat scratches). HEIGHT 6.6 cm (tsuba), LENGTH 6.1 cm (tsuba), 9.7 cm (kozuka) WEIGHT 85.8 g (tsuba), 34.8 g (kozuka) Condition: The tsuba in very good condition with minor wear and traces of use. The kozuka in good condition with wear and some losses to the gilding.

The shakudo tsuba of marugata shape with a gilt rim, kozuka and kogai hitsu-ana, worked in sukashi and takabori with gold and suaka (refined copper) takazogan, depicting six samurai engaged in combat in a pine forest with scrolling clouds above. The kozuka finely worked on a shakudo nanako ground in gold, silver and shibuichi takazogan, depicting a samurai fighting a demon inside a temple structure, his mount waiting outside. The shakudo fuchi and kashira worked on a nanako ground in gold, suaka, and shakudo takazogan, the kashira depicting two samurai standing on a bridge and the fuchi with an archer running through a forest. The two menuki each cast as a samurai on horseback. Tsuba SIZE 7 x 6.5 cm, kozuka LENGTH 9.5 cm, fuchi LENGTH 3.7 cm, menuki LENGTH 3 cm WEIGHT 166.6 g Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of use, light rubbing, and malachite encrustations to the fuchi. The tsuba with handwritten notes and a fitted tomobako box inscribed in Japanese, Mototoshi, shakudo ji Mito, Motozane mon jidai Tenmei goro, Nakado Tetsuo (Tsuba made in shakudo, by Mototoshi, of the Mito School, active during the Tenmei era and a student of Motozane, born circa 1794-1865), signed Nakado Tetsuo and sealed Nakado.
