Description

Large mirror By Sophie Gallardo & Georges-Guillaume Cassan Unique piece Height: 140.5 cm; Width: 114 cm Birch bark inlay and mineral inlay: stone, labradorite, amethyst, crystals. Sophie Gallardo studied interior design, then trained in wood paint restoration to rehabilitate antique furniture. She learns ancient techniques from renowned professionals, and works mainly with birch bark. Sophie Gallardo and Georges-Guillaume Cassan's work enables them to make the most of the birch bark scattered around the forest. They invented an atypical process and developed a unique know-how: birch bark marquetry to dress antique furniture. The choice of this type of bark was obvious to the two designers, partly because of the uniqueness of this white tree spotted with black, and partly because of the symbolism of the birch, a sacred tree for Amerindians, a symbol of wisdom. Each piece is unique and takes several months to complete. They work on beautifully crafted furniture (from the 17th century to the 1970s), often playing on imperfections in the bark and accidents in the material to create graphic shapes and singular motifs. The birchbark veneer is then inlaid with a wide variety of minerals such as labradorite, rock crystal and amethyst. This process gives the furniture a natural, whimsical appearance, transforming each piece into a cabinets of curiosities.
