Chauvet printed on chine, with a separate 2nd state print on bistre on vergé, volant. Few brown spots (more on the frontispiece). Edition of 500 copies; no. 470. Composed in 1780 during the author's imprisonment at the Château de Vincennes, this work takes pleasure in visiting those parts of Scripture and ancient literature that inform us about the customs of antiquity. Des lettres de cachet et des prisons d'État; VIII. Essay on despotism. Secret history of the Berlin court. Letter to Frederick William II, King of Prussia. Posthumous work. sl [Alençon], sn [Malassis le jeune], 1789. 2 vols. in-8 marbled calf, ornate ribbed spines, red and green marbled title and tom. pages, red tr. (period binding). First edition. "This libel was burned by the hand of the executioner: it provoked very lively complaints against the author, who made a kind of disavowal of it, at least as regards publicity and form", Peignot, Dictionnaire des livres condamnés au feu, 321. "This indiscreet revelation of Mirabeau's diplomatic maneuvers, [was] written in a spirit of bitter criticism and in the license of a libel (...) The Emperor Joseph II, the King of Prussia and especially Prince Henri, who was then in Paris, were much maltreated in this production. Louis XVI felt he owed the diplomatic corps some satisfaction, and the libel was condemned by Parliament to be burned by the hangman's hand. Mirabeau's friends have since tried to excuse him: according to them, he only agreed to hand over his manuscript as the only resource that could prevent the bankruptcy of his bookseller Lejay...". Quérard, II, 1158. The work contains some very curious revelations on Freemasonry in the 18th century, particularly in Prussia (Caillet, 7588). Old restored epidermures (Barbier, II, 831).

[Mirabeau] 6 letters addressed to Charlotte de Riqueti de Mirabeau (1747-1820), marquise du Saillant, daughter of the famous marquis and sister of the count. ca.1799, 11p in-8. Two letters are addressed to "ma chère maman", two others to "bonne-maman" and two to "ma chère voisine". Unfortunately, we have not identified the family members who write to Charlotte. Only one letter is dated with the year (30 thermidor year 7).
