Description

LE ROUILLÉ (Guillaume). Le Recueil de l'antique préexcellence de Gaule et des Gauloys. Composed by M. Guillaume Le Rouillé d'Alençon, licencié ès lois. Paris, Chrétien Wechel, 1551. In-8, [2] ff, ff. 3-106, [2] ff, red morocco, ornate ribbed spine, gilt edges on marbling, framing on the inside covers (H. Duru). Small marginal stain on f. 8. Parisian reprint of this very rare work, first published in Poitiers by Jean and Enguilbert de Marnef, in 1546. It forms a largely mythological reconstruction of Gaul's ancient history and comprises three parts, the first concerning the name and origin of the Gauls, the second the picture of Gaul's prosperity, and the third, from page 79, shows that "the country of Gaul is the most convenient, fertile & worthy than any other". This text also includes a verse piece entitled "L'Epistre des rossignols du parc d'Alençon", which was composed on the occasion of the Queen of Navarre's trip to Alençon in 1544. In our edition, it occupies leaves 75-78. (Frère, II, 220.). Copy of the historian Denis-François Secousse (1691-1754), with ex-libris vignette (recovered and) pasted on the first endpapers. A fine copy.
