Very rare catalog of Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy (1637-1687), imprimeur-libraire ordinaire du Roi (1651), survivor of his grandfather Sébastien I Cramoisy (1585-1669), director of the Imprimerie royale du Louvre (1660), sole imprimeur du Roi pour les monnaies, imprimeur de l'ordre de Cîteaux. Son of Paris merchant Pierre Mabre and grandson of printer-librarian Sébastien I Cramoisy, with whom he began a 5-year apprenticeship in Sept. 1652, and with whom he worked in partnership until Sébastien I's death in 1669. Received master's degree on March 6, 1659. Despite obtaining in 1672 a general privilege for customary books, renewed by the Archbishop of Paris in 1675, he often fell victim to provincial forgeries. Also author of numerous dedicatory epistles. Died in Paris in June 1687. His widow succeeded him, sometimes publishing works under her husband's name until 1698, when she liquidated the business (source BnF.)

Fawn granite calf, spine ribbed and decorated (period binding). Covers trimmed. Minor worm damage in margins. The first edition of this highly esteemed version appeared in 1614. This second edition was published just one year after the death of the Jesuit Jacques Sirmond (1559-1651), who, because he was born in Riom, was interested in the great fifth-century bishop of Clermont (Brunet V, 374. Backer & Sommervogel VII, 1240(13). Contemporary manuscript bookplate of E. Faulconnier de Moulins.

A very fine copy bound with the arms of Louis-Auguste de Bourbon, DUC DU MAINE (1670-1736), second child of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan (O.H.R. 2603 fer n°6 bis).

In-4, [32] pp. (including engraved title leaf), 563-[17] pp, several ill. in-t. Brown basane, decorated spine, gilt arms. Beautiful old-style pastiche binding with the arms of Guillaume Pavée de Vandeuvre (1779-1870). First edition illustrated with a handsome allegorical engraved title, 6 fine bandeaux (illustrating episodes from the history of the iconoclasts, 4 of which are after F. Chauveau (1613-1676)), 6 lettrines and 6 culs-de-lampe, all engraved on copper. Minor scattered foxing, paper very lightly browned in places, small light-blue stain at the head of a few leaves. Louis Maimbourg, Jesuit priest and historian (1610-1686), taught the Humanities before becoming a polemical preacher. At the height of the Counter-Reformation, he engaged in violent controversies with the Jansenists, notably challenging their translation of the Bible. His work consists mainly of religious history.
