Large in-8, burgundy half-maroquin with corners, richly decorated ribbed spine, double gilt fillets on covers, gilt head, untrimmed, cover preserved (Dubois d'Enghien). First illustrated edition, one of 100 numbered copies on Hollande (no. 93). Engraved frontispiece on Chine and 66 engraved compositions with suite on Chine (14 at the head of each chapter and 52 full-page). Corners worn, spine lightly rubbed, only a few pages browned, otherwise a fine copy complete with yellow cover illustrated with an engraved composition by Bertall (Brivois, 419).

Emile Zola, Mysteries of Marseille. Paris, Charpentier, 1884. In-12, VIII-448p. New edition, one of 50 hollande, no. 18, the only edition of this kind. The original 1867 edition was published in 3 volumes and without large paper. First edition with Zola's preface, dated July 1884. This is the second edition under this title, and the third: in 1873, it was republished under the pseudonym Agrippa and the title Un duel social. This edition appears to be almost as rare as the original, and curiously enough, only copies on hollande can be found, leading one to wonder whether the print run of this edition is not limited to these 50 copies on hollande. Binding unsigned, but from a uniform set by Thierry, successor to Petit-Simier, brown half-maroquin with corners, ribbed spine, fillets framing the boxes, gilt head, covers preserved. Spine slightly faded, slight yellowing throughout. A good copy.
