KEMPIS (Thomas A). Thomae a Kempis Canonici regularis ord. S. Augustini De Imitatione Christi Libri Quatuor. Lugduni, Apud Joh. et Dan. Elzevirios, [1653]. Small in-12, 257 pp. (including engraved frontispiece title) and [3] blank ff. Red morocco, ornate ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt edges (period binding). Covers and corners slightly worn. "This small volume is rightly considered one of the most beautiful and valuable in the Elzévirienne collection. The date is not indicated on the title, but it is not difficult to determine. Jean and Daniel's partnership lasted only two and a half years (from late 1652 to May 1655). Moreover, it has been noted that copies of the Imitation en vers françois de P. Corneille, dated 1653, were bound after the Imitation latine [...] It is therefore probable [...] that in printing Corneille's version, the Elzeviers had the idea of also publishing the original text. They carried out this project the following year, and at the same time substituted a new frontispiece, dated 1653, in some copies of Corneille's paraphrase. As for the address Lugduni, instead of Lugduni Batavorum, this was [...] a sort of tradition among the Elzeviers, for all the works they hoped to sell in Catholic countries." Willems. A very fine copy, ruled in red ink, in an attractive contemporary morocco binding (Willems, 729.)
