Genève, Pellet, 1777-1781. 45 volumes in-4, speckled half-calf with small vellum corners, ornate smooth spine, red and blue calf titles and giblets (period binding). First edition in in-4 format. It comprises 36 volumes of text, 3 volumes of plates, and the very rare 6 volumes of table, which are mostly missing. Our copy is complete with all plates according to the table in each volume. There are over 400 plates. Diderot began work on this monumental work in 1749. More than two hundred people collaborated on it. Writers, jurists, scientists, art lovers and ecclesiastics all had the project of presenting Europe with as clear a picture as possible of the knowledge acquired since the Renaissance. Copy in uniform binding. Minor wear to bindings, spines a little worn, 5 volumes more severely worn, second plate of first volume of plates detached, slight foxing, some wetness notably at beginning of first volume of plates, outer part of plate 9 of the navy missing from first volume.

A few rare fine wormholes, on few pages and always in the margins. Volumes of plates: Volume 1: spine absent, dampstaining, more pronounced on the last quarter of the volume. 3 plates damaged (Marine section). Volume 2: Very good condition. Volume 3: Slight marginal wetness, not serious. Volume 1 includes 181 plates, 10 of which are not listed in the table of engravings. Volume 2 includes 197 plates. Volume 3 includes 139 plates. The collation corresponds to the tables of engravings indicated in the book. Complete. One clock plate bound at the end of volume 36. Several folding tables in the text volumes.
