Geographical lottery (France, circa 1875) Geographical lottery (France, circa 1875). Wood-cardboard box, size 41.4 x 29 x 6 cm. Gilded globe and title on lid, embossed frame. The interior is divided into three compartments, containing: 24 game cards, oblong format 26.5 x 12 cm / 90 numbered boxwood counters / a wicker basket with bone tokens. The playing cards have two useful sides. One is a classic lotto board, in black, with fifteen numbers; the other has fifteen lithographed and colored squares, each assigned to a department, including Algeria: name of the department and capital, pictorial representation of a famous local child or local production or building. Boxwood pieces feature a number and the name of a département. The game can be played in two different ways: one is the most ordinary lotto game, where only the numbers are taken into account; the other is more educational, using the name of the département as a starting point from which players discover the name of the chief town and local specialities; the first is a little sad, the second is more cheerful, using the coloured side of the cards, which are very attractively decorated, no doubt to show children that education is a pleasure! Note that the game was published after the defeat of 1870, and the lost départements are depicted in mourning, in black on a blue-grey background. Each illustrated square features two three-digit numbers, the meaning of which remains a mystery. The cover is a little soiled, with some flaws on the edge.

Geographical educational lotto game. It includes 90 numbered boxwood tokens in a bag and 18 color lithographed cards (size 14 x 8 cm). Each card features five départements represented by colored vignettes (inhabitants in traditional costumes); each département has its name, prefecture, sub-prefectures and a number. On each map, departments are grouped by region (except Corsica and overseas departments). The annexed departments of Alsace-Lorraine are not included. A lotto of great craftsmanship, closer to post-romantic games than to those of its time. One of only a handful of games produced by Narçon, a publisher whose games are always highly polished.

Lid with rounded edges, brass clasp, title label (gold on red background) glued to lid. The box contains 72 solid wooden cubes, 3.5 cm square, chromolithography glued on each side; ten accordion folders, each consisting of six chromolithographed images serving as models. Geographic cube set. The six cubes in each set are used to reconstitute six images of départements, by arranging them so that their faces match to form the image. For each department, a map, a coat of arms, local specialties and, possibly, a medallion portrait of a famous man from the department are shown. The 72 geographical images to be reconstructed correspond to metropolitan départements. Very attractive set in chromolithography and gilded printing, printed in Lorraine (Cirey sur Vezouve). Two model folders are missing, but the set is in fine condition.
