Descrizione

Asia - PICARD (Victor-Léopold). Tonkin Expeditionary Corps. Notes and memories of the expedition, Marine infantry and Tonkinese riflemen. Summary of operations. [MANUSCRIT]. Sl, September-October 1886. In-8, 228-[4] pp. in fine, highly legible handwriting (approx. 20 lines per page), with abundant iconography included in pagination, modest half cloth with corners, smooth spine (period binding). Spine uniformly soiled, but a good copy. A very interesting amateur manuscript produced on the spot by sergeant-major (later second lieutenant) Victor-Léopold Picard (b. February 2, 1861), a member of the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps. This was obviously the second campaign, the one that earned Jules Ferry his ministry in March 1885, and led to the occupation of the entire province and the dismemberment of the Annam Empire. The text is essentially a reproduction of official documents (agendas, proclamations, articles, etc.) linked together by an account of the operations undertaken from the capture of the Hanoi citadel on April 2, 1882 to the end of March 1885. The manuscript is enhanced by an interesting amateur iconography, meticulously assembled either from previously printed material, or from sketches and drawings by members of the Expeditionary Corps.
