Aubergine half-maroquin, smooth spine finely decorated with gilt rocaille irons, gilt title and tomaison (period binding). One spine unstained, tear with paper loss on one board. Illustrated with 2 lithographed portraits of the author and his brother Dominique-François, and 60 lithographed plates based on the author's lively sketches. Frequent foxing and spotting. Jacques ARAGO (1790-1855) was the third brother of the famous astronomer François Arago (1786-1853). An inveterate traveler, in 1817 he obtained government permission to embark on the Uranie (Capitaine Freycinet) as a draftsman. He circumnavigated the globe on this famous frigate, which also included (exceptionally) Madame Rose de Freycinet. The frigate ran aground on the Falkland Islands, and Arago didn't return until 1821. He went blind in 1837.
