Paris, Panckoucke, 1778. 2 volumes in-4 tortoiseshell calf, ornate ribbed spine, bronze morocco title-pages, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, marbled boards (period binding). First edition of the French translation in quarto format. Translation by Suard and Morellet of Robertson's history of America. Illustrated with 4 folding maps (Gulf of Mexico, South America, Mexico, South America) and a plate of Mexican antiquities, engraved by Bénard. Divided into eight books, the two volumes contain the story of the discovery of the New World and the conquest of Mexico and Peru. Among the documents reproduced is a brief extract from the rare letter from Cortès to Charles V dated 1519 (t. 2, pp. 524-525) and a catalog of the Spanish books and manuscripts cited by the author and on which he based his work (t. 2, pp. 526-538). (Sabin 71991; Quérard VIII, 77.) Armorial bookplate of the Marquis de Saporta (1823-1895), French naturalist. Very minor gnawing to tail caps. A superb copy.

First edition of the French translation by Suard and Jansen of the work by Robertson (1721-1793), principal of the University of Edinburgh and His Britannic Majesty's historiographer for Scotland, which was published in Paris just two years after the declaration of independence of the United States of America. The English edition had appeared a year earlier. This work has often been praised for its rigorous use of bibliographical sources. Volume 2 contains an interesting catalog of the Spanish books and manuscripts that Mr. Robertson cites in this history. A fine copy.
