America - LAS CASAS (Dom Barthélémy de). La Découverte des Indes Occidentales par les Espagnols, written by Dom Balthazar [sic] de Las Casas, Bishop of Chiapa. [translated by Abbé J.-B. Morvan de Bellegarde]. Paris, André Pralard, 1697. In-12 brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated with attractive bird's irons, title page in red calf (period binding). Headcap missing. First edition of the French translation by Abbé Jean-Baptiste Morvan de Bellegarde (1648-1734) of the account by the Spanish Dominican Bartolomé de las Casas (1484-1566), famous for his defense of the Indians during the Valladolid controversy following the violent intervention of the conquistadors in America; the translator has "softened in some places things that seemed too cruel" (disclaimer). Illustrated with a title-frontispiece depicting Hernán Cortés and Montezuma, and a vignette bearing the arms of the Count of Toulouse, the book's dedicatee, both engraved by Pierre Giffart fils. Some small brown spots. Modern handwritten bookplate in blue ink on title.
