Alsace. Ihrem würdigen Altmeister herrn Rechtsanwalt Geheimen Justizrath Dr Ferdinand Schneegans. [birthday gift to a Strasbourg lawyer] Strasbourg, 1900. Double sheet on strong cardboard, entirely illuminated by hand (handwritten signature of the illustrator Ghurst), given to Ferdinand Schneegans on the occasion of his 80th birthday and placed in an in folio portfolio in blue morocco, smooth spine, wide gilt decoration framing the boards, wide gilt inner lace (binding by Baczynski). It is signed by members of the Strasbourg, Colmar, Mulhouse, Saverne, Sarrguemine & Metz courts on separate sheets. The Schneegans family belonged to the Strasbourg bourgeoisie. Several of its members had political or military careers, or distinguished themselves in intellectual circles and learned societies. Ferdinand Schneegans (1820 - 1901) studied at the Strasbourg Faculty of Law. A lawyer by profession, he embarked on a political career after 1870. A supporter of the Empire, he served as General Councillor of Strasbourg between 1873 and 1886. He played a political role after the annexation of Alsace in 1870. He was elected to the cantonal elections in 1873, having been the only candidate to take the oath of loyalty to the German Empire. He was also elected when the Landesausschuss (Delegation) of the Pays d'Empire was created in 1874. He did not stand for re-election in 1886, and also resigned his seat on the Landesausschuss. The government appointed him State Councillor for Alsace-Lorraine in 1891.
