First edition, illustrated with 24 engraved plates (3 plans including 1 fold-out, 4 views including 2 beautiful fold-outs by Chafourier, and 17 plates showing the abbey's tombs, altars and relics). A good copy. Latin bookplate on title of the Abbey des Blancs-Manteau, Paris, part of the Saint-Maur congregation, and another handwritten note: "ex-dono de l'auteur, nous l'avons fait relier". Corners and edges worn, first spine partly split, small light marginal wetness.

Brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, title page in red marble (contemporary binding). Covers missing, corners worn, stained and rubbed. Precious anonymous manuscript concerning the history of the abbey of Port-Royal, copying several period pieces. The abridged history was written by Michel Tronchay and published in 1710 (sn). It provides a wealth of details on the proceedings, the abuse of royal power and the events surrounding the suppression of the abbey. As for the "Gémissements", four texts with this title are known ("Premier gémissement d'une âme vivement touchée de la destruction du saint monastère de Port-Royal-des-Champs. [Second gémissement... Troisième gémissement... Quatrième gémissement... 1714]") attributed to Father P. Boyer and Abbé J. B. Le Sesne d'Etemare, published anonymously between 1710 and 1717. The text of this manuscript corresponds well to the text of Father Pierre Boyer's "Premier Gémissement", the first edition of which appeared in 1710. The text by Mother Angélique Arnauld d'Andilly also appeared in 1710. Small handwritten bookplate on page 1 "Mme V[euv]e Belier[?]". Bookplate JM.

Paris, Pierre Chevalier, 1612. In-4, red morocco, ornate ribbed spine, boards decorated in the Du Seuil style, gilt roulette on the edges. First edition of one of the best works on the history of Paris. It is illustrated with 11 figures in the text. Jacques Du Breuil (Paris 1528-1614) was a monk at the abbey of Saint-Germain-de- Prés, then abbot of Saint-Allire-de- Clermont. A precious copy in contemporary morocco.

Burgundy - FYOT DE LA MARCHE (Claude Philippe). Histoire de l'église abbatiale et collégiale de Saint Estienne de Dijon. Avec les preuves & pouillé des bénéfices dépendant de cette abbaie. Dijon, Ressayre, 1696. 2 parts in one in-folio volume, granite calf, ornate ribbed spine (period binding). Rare first edition, illustrated with a large double-page fold-out plan of the old and new town of Dijon, engraved in intaglio by Le Pautre. An important work on the history of Dijon. The author traces the origins of the foundation of the Saint-Etienne abbey back to 343, and the evangelizing role of Saint Bénigne. He recalls Saint-Etienne's precedence over all other Dijon churches, and describes the rules governing the clerical community that ran the place. It lists the abbots who were in charge of the church, and recounts the key events in their administration. The history of Saint-Étienne ends in 1695, when Claude Fyot became abbot. He was responsible for the partial reconstruction of the church, which had been destroyed by fire in 1686. This history is followed by a list of ecclesiastical benefices and rights dependent on the Saint-Etienne chapter, and their justifications. The second part of the work is a collection of transcriptions (mostly in Latin) of deeds proving the history and possessions of the abbey and chapter. A fine copy.
