A fascinating handwritten military treatise, evidently written by an Austrian officer of the Corps of Engineers. It concerns the defenses of the north-eastern borders of the Austrian Empire at the end of 1810. At that time, Austria was struggling to recover from the disastrous campaigns of 1809 against Napoleon, which culminated in the Peace of Schönbrunn, which took away several of its provinces. These included Western Galicia. The Carpathians thus once again constituted, as the anonymous officer in this manuscript puts it, "the natural barrier of the Monarchy [i.e. the Austrian Empire]" from Moravia to Bukovina, on the borders of Russia and the Ottoman Empire, a distance of over 500 km. As the paths and roads in this part of Upper Hungary are hardly passable, and the fortified points of yesteryear are no longer maintained, "it would be difficult for an army corps in Hungary charged with defending the frontiers to act against an enemy corps". The author reviews the geographical and military situation of this natural frontier that has become political once again, dividing the Carpathian chain into three sections. The fact that this document is written in French should come as no surprise: at the time, a senior officer in the Austrian army knew perfectly well how to speak and write in the language of the European aristocracy.
