DUPUIS (Amable-Joseph). L'Artiste patriote, ou La Vente des biens nationaux, comédie, en cinq actes et en vers, par M. Dupuis de Bourg-en-Bresse. First performed in Paris on August 1st, the third year of liberty. Paris, Gueffier, & chez l'auteur [Imprimerie de Froullé], 1791. In-8, viii-92 pp. in red morocco, smooth ornate spine, green title page, triple gilt fillet with lyres and urns in spandrels on covers, numeral JD in a handsome concentric frame pushed to the center of the covers, with handsome gilt palette and easel motif below, gilt edges (Directoire binding). Light spotting. Unique edition of this "patriotic" piece. Two hypotheses can be put forward to identify the number: 1. JD stands for Joseph Dupuis, and this is the author's copy, which explains the sumptuous binding for this type of text. - 2 Alternatively, given the play's subject, featuring a young patriotic artist, and the presence of painting motifs in the numbering of the plates, it is tempting to attribute this JD to the very famous Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), who was very involved in the revolutionary process. However, he signed his works L. David. Wet stamp and handwritten bookplate of a notary Thibault, dated 1858. A fine copy.
