Deux-Ponts, Imprimerie ducale, 1776. 2 volumes of xvi-309-[3] pp ; 236-[2] pp. in 1 vol in-8 fawn calf, smooth spine grotesquely decorated, burgundy title page, gilt roulette framing the boards, roulette on the edges, marbled tr. (period binding). First edition of this singular publication, praised by Voltaire, in which the author paints an impartial picture of France during the reign of Louis XV. An essay on the progress of the arts and the human spirit, the work praises the philosophers and deals successively with wars, agriculture, trade, the arts, literature and the sciences. The second part deals with world travel. At the head of the book is an interesting preface in which the author complains about the Censors. Printed in the German duchy of Deux-Ponts, its introduction into France was forbidden. Barbier I, 326: "l'introduction de ce livre en France fut défendue par la police". A fine copy.
