First in-4 edition of this collection of most of the memoirs written by Beaumarchais to defend himself against the accusation of corruption brought against him by the councillor Goëzman. Goëzman was the judge in the case pitting the playwright against the Comte de la Blache, heir to the famous financier Pâris-Duverney, for a disputed debt of 15,000 livres. [1]-28 pp. Small in-4 half calf, ornate spine, title page in red marble, red edges (contemporary binding). Some minor rubbing. Large, handsome armorial bookplate engraved and pasted on the flyleaf. The famous Goezman affair, which gripped the French and European public and the press of the time, began on July 17, 1770 with the death of financier Joseph Paris Duverney. The latter had made testamentary dispositions in favor of his associate Beaumarchais, which were soon strongly contested by the Count of La Blache, the financier's universal legatee. Although Beaumarchais won the first instance against La Blache in 1772, the case was taken up again in 1773 by Judge Goëzman, a renowned criminal lawyer. Several months of fast-paced proceedings followed, during which Beaumarchais published his satirical and highly virulent Mémoires against the judge and his entourage, which caused a scandal at court. The affair came to an end on February 26, 1774: the Parlement de Paris condemned Beaumarchais to a reprimand and a fine (the latter, stripped of his civic rights, would never rest until he regained the Court's favor), Beaumarchais' memoirs had to be torn up and burned, and Goëtzman resigned from his position. Attached: Mémoire à consulter et consultation pour Madame la Comtesse de Mirabeau. Sur l'imprimé à Aix, à Avignon, de l'imprimerie des libraires associés, 1783. Boulliot, the author is DEMANDRE, maître en géographie [...] M. de Loménie, in a note in 'Beaumarchais et son temps', tome I, p. 46, claims to have seen Julie CARON's manuscript, entirely in her own hand, and accompanied by the censor's visa.") A very fine copy bearing the coat of arms of Louis Antoine Auguste de ROHAN-CHABOT, known as the Comte de Chabot, Comte de Maillé-la-Marche then Duc de Chabot (1733-1786). (O.H.R. 2037.)

Reprint of the original edition, printed the same year in Kehl with the same typeface used for the Voltaire, and with the same 5 beautiful engraved figures after SAINT-QUENTIN (but larger and engraved by Lienard, Halbou and Lingé), here complete with the extremely rare errata leaf and enriched with two frontispiece portraits of Beaumarchais, one before the letter. Both portraits are foxed, but a very fine copy in a handsome binding by Petit (Tchemerzine II, 16).
