James A. Seddon War-Dated Autograph Letter Signed, Approving a "passport through the lines to the United States" Former Democratic congressman (1815-1880) who served as Confederate Secretary of War. Civil War-dated LS, one page, 9 x 7.75, Confederate States of America (War Department) letterhead, April 9, 1864. Handwritten letter to General Winder, in full: “Give Mr. Ludwig Schulz a passport through the lines to the United States, taking his parole of honor not to reveal anything prejudicial to the Confederate cause.” In fine condition, with light show-through along the bottom edge from old mounting remnants on the back.
