Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed as Assistant Secretary of the Navy TLS as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, one page, 5.25 x 6.75, Navy Department letterhead, July 1, 1897. Quick letter to writer Henry Mellen Prentiss, in full: “I thank you very much for your book. I shall read it with great interest.” In fine condition. Accompanied by Prentiss's calling card and the original mailing envelope, addressed in a secretarial hand. Henry Mellen Prentiss was born July 20, 1840, in Bangor, Maine. He graduated from Harvard University in 1864. On the completion of his studies, he became the manager of his father's extensive estate, directing operations on the vast tracts of timber land owned by his father in Maine and Pennsylvania. Prentiss became an important figure in American interests and a recognized authority on everything relating to Arctic exploration. Henry Mellen wrote extensively on science, with an interest in Arctic exploration. His stories appeared in the Westminster Review, Nineteenth Century magazine, and the New York Herald. The book sent to Roosevelt was undoubtedly his 1897 work, ‘The Great Polar Current,’ which won critical acclaim.
