Andrew Johnson Document Signed as President, Pardoning a New York Counterfeiter Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.5 x 11, April 13, 1867. President Johnson authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to “a Warrant for the unconditional pardon of James Boyd.” Signed at the conclusion by Andrew Johnson. In fine condition, with a small smudge to the signature, and light show-through along the left edge from an old mounting strip on the back. As referenced in the 1868 House of Representatives documents archive: ‘James Boyd was convicted at the January term, 1867, of the United States court for the northern district of New York of passing and having in his possession with intent to pass counterfeit United States treasury notes and sentenced to fifteen months imprisonment. The pardon of the prisoner was granted on account of his previous good character and his correct deportment during confinement. The Hon. Thomas Cornell, M.C. says: ‘I am of the opinion that Boyd never passed it knowing it to be counterfeit he having received it from others who imposed upon him. I have known him several years as an honest industrious man and I recommend his pardon because I believe it would be right.’ Pardoned: April 13, 1867.’
