Max Brüning, Mädchenkopf Portrait of a girl with long hair in profile, etching on laminated China paper, signed "Max Brüning" in pencil below the image, inscribed and dated "Max Brüning Nordfrankreich 1916" in the plate lower right, stronger conservation defects, framed behind glass, image dimensions approx. 21 x 15.5 cm. Artist information: German painter, commercial artist, designer and etcher (1887 Delitzsch - 1968 Lindau/Bodensee), studied from 1902 at the Leipzig Academy under Alois Kolb, later pupil of Peter Halm in Munich, 1913 study trip to France, Belgium, Italy, Greece, Asia Minor and Turkey, from 1914 master pupil of Franz von Stuck at the Munich Academy, during the 1st World War drawing teacher of the Crown Prince of Bavaria. He worked in Leipzig from 1918-23, moved to Berlin in 1923, his studio became a much-noticed sight, he owned one of the richest art collections of Asian provenance, it became a meeting place for domestic and foreign personalities from film, art, sport and politics, after his marriage in 1935 he briefly lived on the Baltic Sea and in Oberstdorf, from 1938 in Igls near Innsbruck, 1943 destruction of approx. 300 etching plates destroyed in a bombing raid in Berlin, expelled from Austria as a German citizen in 1945 and settled in Lindau on Lake Constance, study trips to Spain and Ticino in the 1950s, road accident in 1963 and end of his artistic career, source: Vollmer, Dressler, matriculation register of the Munich Academy and Internet.
